Experiences Of Transitioning Medics And Hospital Corpsman, David Renfro May 2023

Experiences Of Transitioning Medics And Hospital Corpsman, David Renfro

Doctoral Projects

Approximately 2,000 medics transition from military service to civilian jobs annually, and the civilian workforce currently does not have a mechanism to utilize the skills of these transitioning veterans. Medics and Hospital Corpsmen are not licensed or certified, making transferring into employment in the community difficult. The Veterans Affairs (VA) has an intermediate care technician (ICT) program that provides employment for previous active-duty medics and hospital corpsmen. Understanding the transition of medics and hospital corpsmen better positions the Department of Defense and the VA leadership to support the transitioning veteran.
This DNP project used a quality improvement framework, and a …

How Implementing A Digital Competency Management System Reduced Nurse Training Cost And Improved Npd Practitioner Satisfaction In A Pediatric Hospital, Dionne Margallo

Doctoral Projects

Healthcare organizations must have high-quality nursing staff to deliver optimal patient care. Educators and managers evaluate nurses by their performance through nursing competencies, or “knowledge, skills, [and] abilities” (KSA) (American Nurses Association, 2015, p. 86). Traditional competency evaluations and manual tracking posed a problem within one pediatric hospital. Leaders did not have a transparent way to see the knowledge and skills of their nursing staff. This resulted in increased organizational costs due to retraining and increased workload and job dissatisfaction among educators. The purpose of this quality improvement (QI) project was to evaluate how implementing a digital competency management system …

Doctoral Projects

A tiered Centralized Education in the Transition-to-Practice (TTP) Program is crucial to improving nurses' Level of Confidence on nursing-sensitive quality indicators. The benefits of a structured orientation program taught by trained content experts are evident in the literature. In addition, training transition-to-practice RNs during onboarding with training and assessment sessions throughout the orientation program to increase frequency provides skills acquisition. This study examined the impact of a house-wide education program on the nurses' confidence levels of CLABSI prevention, a measured nursing-sensitive quality indicator. This quasi-experimental quality improvement study measured the confidence and comfort levels of transition-to-practice RNs and identified that …

Respondents completed two surveys, the performance improvement instrument and the Professional Practice Environment Assessment Scale (PPEAS). Surveys were paired for analysis. There was a statistically significant median increase in participants confidence for all questions on the PI instrument post-intervention. Results for the PPEAS …

Nurse Managers: An Association Between Empowerment And Burnout, Sonja Lynn Avery Apr 2019

Nurse Managers: An Association Between Empowerment And Burnout, Sonja Lynn Avery

Doctoral Projects

The purpose of the study is to ascertain the presence of an inverse relationship between nurse managers’ feelings of structural empowerment and self-perception of burnout. Although research is available studying the effects of staff nurse empowerment and burnout, literature is sparse relative to evaluation of nurse manager empowerment and burnout. Of the studies available, there is supportive evidence pertaining to the negative implications associated with nurse manager burnout such as reduced staff nurse retention and morale, decrease in quality of patient care, and financial impact on organizational success. With such negative implications associated with a lack of empowerment and burnout, …

Nurse Practitioner Clinical Education: Evaluation Of A Clinical Residency Model, Lisa Wilson Hood Apr 2018

Nurse Practitioner Clinical Education: Evaluation Of A Clinical Residency Model, Lisa Wilson Hood

Doctoral Projects

A new clinical residency education model was developed and implemented in response to a family nurse practitioner program’s difficulty in securing and maintaining qualified preceptors and clinical sites for students in the program, and a community hospital’s shortage of nurse practitioners for their rural healthcare clinics. This Doctor of Nursing Practice project conducted an evaluation on this new model. The evaluation results showed that the clinical residency model met standards of nurse practitioner education, incorporated nursing leader recommendations for new clinical models, and proved to be an effective model for clinical education.

Factors That Affect Turnover Intention Of Registered Nurses In The Acute Hospital: A Meta-Analysis From 2006-2016, Helen Pagilagan

Doctoral Projects

Multiple complex variables influence nurse turnover. This meta-analysis examines the strength of the relationships between factors that affect turnover intent among staff registered nurses employed in the acute hospital setting in the United States. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) was used to guide the reporting of essential components of this study. Included studies were published in English between 2006-2016, reported study sample sizes, a Cronbach coefficient for the study instruments, conducted quantitative analysis and reported Pearson correlation r values. Two factors affecting turnover intention were found in the four included studies. Statistical analyses show that …

An Exploration Of Social Capital Among Nurses In The Ambulatory Setting, Anna Lutz, Tamara Mckinnon

Doctoral Projects

Bullying and lateral violence are a sadly, common phenomena among nurses. While this issue has been examined within the inpatient, acute setting, it has not been widely researched in the ambulatory setting. This concept is usually looked at from a negative standpoint, looking at the levels of lateral violence. The purpose of this research study was done to explore the levels of social capital, also known as positive peer support, among nurses in the ambulatory setting. The participants of the study were 39 registered nurses from a public health department and an embedded care management department. The tool used was …

Effect Of An Emergency Nurse Heart Failure Educational Intervention, Lori Hudgens May 2016

Effect Of An Emergency Nurse Heart Failure Educational Intervention, Lori Hudgens

Doctoral Projects

Background: Research indicates many nurses lack the appropriate heart failure (HF) education necessary to assist with readmission reduction efforts. Employer approved nurse HF education has resulted in improved nurse HF knowledge, and, reduced readmissions.

Problem: ED nurses require a competent knowledge of heart failure to effectively educate heart failure patients upon admission to the ED. No research has been conducted with ED nurse specific populations to assess ED nurse knowledge of heart failure, and, to determine if heart failure educational interventions increase ED nurse' HF knowledge.

Aims: To evaluate the effectiveness of an ED nurse b.eart failure educational intervention in …

Barriers To Preoperative Teaching In A Culturally Diverse Healthcare Environment, Rancelle Ablan May 2016

Barriers To Preoperative Teaching In A Culturally Diverse Healthcare Environment, Rancelle Ablan

Doctoral Projects

The role of the professional nurse is integral in educating and ensuring that patients understand essential components of their plan of care. This is especially true for patients who are to undergo surgical interventions; evidence has demonstrated that preoperative education provided to patients is linked with positive patient outcomes and a decrease in post-operative complications (Blackstone, Garrett, & Hasselkus, 2011). This qualitative study investigated the barriers that nurses experience in providing preoperative education to diverse patients in a multicultural healthcare environment. Ten registered nurses at a private community hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area participated in an hour long …

A Novel Method For Assessing Medication-Related Adverse Outcomes In A Community Hospital, Christopher M. Patty May 2014

A Novel Method For Assessing Medication-Related Adverse Outcomes In A Community Hospital, Christopher M. Patty

Doctoral Projects

The use of medications for hospitalized patients is universal, and unfortunately medication-related adverse outcomes are common. The accurate assessment of medication-related harm in hospitalized patients is foundational to the development of an effective hospital medication safety program. Every hospital has its own unique "fingerprint" of harm, accurate determination of the nature of medication-related harm specific to each hospital is necessary to facilitate prevention of that harm with specific and effective interventions. This project has provided a community hospital with its first systematic methodology for assessing medication-related harm. The methodology is adapted from that used in a recent national-level study.
