A Plan To Improve Sleep During Critical Care Hospital Stay, Andrea Nutting
A Plan To Improve Sleep During Critical Care Hospital Stay, Andrea Nutting
MSN Capstone Projects
The purpose of this paper is to bring awareness and possible solutions to the ongoing issue of sleep deprivation in hospitalized patients, specifically patients in the intensive care unit. Sleep deprivation can lead to delay in healing, and therefore delay in discharge. There are also many other issues that coincide with sleep deprivation, such as risk for development of delirium and lack of motivation to participate in care. The ICU is a constant state of distress for not only the staff, but also the family members and ultimately the patient. The stressful environment can inhibit relaxation needed to sleep, which …
Nursing Care Of The Pediatric Patient With Autism, Cayley Frolik
Nursing Care Of The Pediatric Patient With Autism, Cayley Frolik
Honors Capstones
The purpose of this project is to help educate current and future nurses on ways to understand and better connect with pediatric patients with autism. Standard nursing curriculum tends to focus primarily on the clinical approach for mainstream patients. In one short year, I recognized a glaring need for nurses to learn how to care for those with autism, as well as how to support and educate their families to create the best environment for whole success. It is very difficult to understand the needs of these specific patients without the proper toolkit. It is my intention to research and …

In A Bind: Effect Of Abdominal Binding On Postoperative Pain In Abdominal Surgery Patients, Mattison Edinger-Vanatta
The Downtown Review
This evidence-based project seeks to answer the question, in patients who have undergone abdominal surgery, what is the effect of abdominal binders on postoperative pain? A literature review was conducted and ultimately, five peer-reviewed articles, comprised of three randomized controlled trials and two systematic reviews, were selected to answer this question. Each article studied the effect of abdominal binders using a “binder” and a “non-binder” group in patients who had undergone various types of open abdominal surgeries, including gynecological cancer excisions, cesarean deliveries, midline laparotomies, hernia repairs, and more. Each study used the visual analogue scale to assess patient pain …
Enhancing Public Health And School Nurse Knowledge Around Bullying And Mental Health Issues In The Pediatric Population, Holly Bartels
Enhancing Public Health And School Nurse Knowledge Around Bullying And Mental Health Issues In The Pediatric Population, Holly Bartels
Nursing Capstones
Childhood bullying within schools and the community can leave lasting short- and long-term consequences that can extend into adulthood if not identified early on. Both the bullies and victims of bullies can be impacted both mentally and physically because of bullying. With the increase of technology and social media in schools, cyberbullying has also become a concern. A comprehensive electronic literature search was completed to understand if enhancing public health and school nurse knowledge around bullying and mental health issues would reduce the prevalence of adverse outcomes associated with childhood bullying. Results of the literary search found school and public …
The Importance Of Providing Multimodal Analgesia: A Literature Review Of Nonpharmacologic Pain Treatments, Miriam Swartzentruber
The Importance Of Providing Multimodal Analgesia: A Literature Review Of Nonpharmacologic Pain Treatments, Miriam Swartzentruber
Senior Honors Theses
Pain is a central aspect of the human experience. While painful stimuli can be beneficial in alerting the brain to the fact that there is something wrong, left untreated, pain can cause devastating long-term effects on the individual, both physically and mentally. Pain has traditionally been either undertreated or managed solely using pharmacologic methods, with less thought given to the importance of supplementing therapy with nonpharmacologic interventions. By incorporating nonpharmacologic methods of pain management into nursing care, patients can be provided with holistic treatment that improves patient outcomes, decreases healthcare costs, avoids future complications, and improves overall quality of life.
Education To Prevent Psychological Distress In Icu Patients, Casey Robinson
Education To Prevent Psychological Distress In Icu Patients, Casey Robinson
Master of Science in Nursing Scholarly Project
Admission to an intensive care unit can become a traumatic event for some patients and can cause them to experience psychological distress. Psychological distress is when patients experience anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder related to ICU admission. With the introduction of the COVID-19 pandemic, this psychological distress has become more of a problem with patients and current nursing practices are falling short in providing quality psychological care. Surgery ICU nurses at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center were given a pre-test on preventing psychological distress in ICU patients to facilitate practice change. A short educational offering was provided to …

The key search words included ‘NICU and decibels', ‘reducing decibels', ‘neonatal abstinence syndrome' ‘decibels', ‘preterm infants' and 'normal weight preterm infant*'. The …
Nurses’ Reported Use Of Therapeutic Interventions Surrounding A Stillbirth Event, Sonya Woo
Nurses’ Reported Use Of Therapeutic Interventions Surrounding A Stillbirth Event, Sonya Woo
Nursing | Senior Theses
Psychological alterations and therapeutic interventions utilized for mothers who have suffered a stillbirth have been assessed and addressed in prior literature. This researcher reviewed ten articles highlighting the depression, grief, guilt, stress and concerns that can arise and interventions that were initiated within weeks immediately following stillbirth, during the time of a subsequent pregnancy, and a few years after having a subsequent child. An increased utilization of healthcare and health care provider presence have shown to positively influence the psychological effects of stillbirth. This researcher looked into the frequency and variety of which these interventions are being implemented in a …
Creating Restful Environments: Applying Evidenced-Based Interventions To Increase The Patients Perceptions Of Room Quietness At Night, Timothy Marks
Creating Restful Environments: Applying Evidenced-Based Interventions To Increase The Patients Perceptions Of Room Quietness At Night, Timothy Marks
West Chester University Doctoral Projects
Florence Nightingale first described the detrimental effects of noise on patients as an element nurses could control. Hospitalized patients who sleep in the hospital are at risk for poor periods of rest from unwanted noise in the care environment. This Doctor of Nursing Practice Project will assess interventions aimed at increasing the patient’s perception of quietness around the care environment at night for a pilot population. Swanson’s Theory of Caring will be utilized as a framework for the project. Outcomes of nursing interventions were reviewed for the improved patient perception of the care environment at night and resultant health outcomes. …

Nursing Undergraduate Work
In 2016, four out of every 1000 babies born in the US died within one month of age. This systematic research review explored nursing interventions that addressed barriers that impact neonatal mortality. The most significant barriers nurses faced in reducing and preventing NM were maternal access to healthcare and education during pregnancy, which can be influenced by maternal age, low socioeconomic status, lack of familial support, poor health literacy, and geographic location. The articles examined included nursing interventions that were evidence-based and addressed barriers relating to NM. Interventions promoting the reduction of NM included education of women’s health and prenatal …
Aortic Aneurysm, James Lower
Aortic Aneurysm, James Lower
Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
An aneurysm is a bulging or outpouching of the vessel wall which can progress to a dissection or a tear in the vessel wall. There are two types of classification for aortic aneurysms based on the Standford classification: type A involving the ascending aorta, and type B involving the descending aorta. Major risk factors for aortic aneurysms are hypertension, smoking, and male gender. Aortic aneurysms can be asymptomatic or include a wide range of symptoms such as vague back pain that radiates, and shortness of breath. The overarching pathophysiology is inflammation causing a breakdown in elastin and collagen. Inflammation, oxidative …

Psychometric Testing Of The Endotracheal Suction Assessment Tool© (Esat©): An Exploratory Sequential Mixed Methods Study, Kylie Davies
Theses
Background: Endotracheal tube (ETT) suction is a common nursing procedure performed in paediatric intensive care settings. Significant side effects of this procedure can dramatically affect the stability of the critically ill ventilated paediatric patient. The lack of clear standards for determining when the procedure is warranted, especially in paediatrics, can present challenges for the inexperienced paediatric intensive care nurse when assessing a patient’s need for ETT suction. Previous research underpinned the development of an Endotracheal Suction Assessment Tool© (ESAT©) to guide inexperienced nurses through the decision making process to determine suction requirements. The aim of the ESAT© is to improve …

A New Approach To An Old Problem: Defining Nursing’S Role In Successful Transitions To Long-Term Residential Care, Kyleen Aldrich
Honors College Theses
A growing body of nursing research addresses the transitional period for older adults entering long-term residential care. However, gaps exist in our understanding of nursing’s role in the transition process. Our aim is to examine the available evidence and develop a model of nursing strategies and interventions to ease the transition to long-term care. This model describes interventions that nurses can incorporate into everyday practice.
A literature review was conducted to examine the transitional care needs and interventions for older adults with a goal of developing a model addressing transitions to long-term care.
Most nursing studies provided descriptive information about …
The Effect Of Oral Care On Intracranial Pressure In Critically Ill Adults, Christina Szabo
The Effect Of Oral Care On Intracranial Pressure In Critically Ill Adults, Christina Szabo
Theses and Dissertations
A major goal in the care of patients with neurological problems is to prevent or minimize episodes of increased intracranial pressure (ICP). Elevations in ICP in response to nursing interventions have been acknowledged since the 1960’s when ICP monitoring was first introduced in the clinical setting. Until recently few studies have specifically examined the effect of oral care on ICP and oral care and other hygiene measures were combined or not specified, prohibiting a direct interpretation of the influence of oral care alone on ICP. The purpose of this study was to describe the relationship between routine oral care interventions …
