Lung Cancer Screening In A Primary Care Clinic For Coal Mine, Glenda Mills, Sarah Cobb Apr 2024

Lung Cancer Screening In A Primary Care Clinic For Coal Mine, Glenda Mills, Sarah Cobb

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Lung cancer is the leading cause of mortality for both men and women in the United States. Guidelines are set by the American Cancer Society for annual screenings of at-risk patients. Early identification of lung cancer risk and screening with low-dose CT scans can increase detection and treatment thereby reducing risk of death or disability. Coal miners are exposed to numerous cancer-causing agents, such as toxic chemicals, dust pollution from coal, and diesel exhaust fumes. However, primary care clinics serving coal miners lack lung cancer screenings despite the increased risk miners face. Patients were screened using criteria set forth by …

Empowering Lung Cancer Survivors In Post-Treatment Survivorship Care Using Participatory Action Research, Kelly Filchner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Purpose: To explore the experiences of lung cancer survivors (LCS) and their informal and professional caregivers with post-treatment care and to empower them to implement action-based study findings.

Transitions In Palliative Care: Referral Time And Healthcare Utilization In Advanced Stage Colon, Rectal And Lung Cancer Patients., Ann Lawani May 2022

Transitions In Palliative Care: Referral Time And Healthcare Utilization In Advanced Stage Colon, Rectal And Lung Cancer Patients., Ann Lawani

Dissertations

Background: Despite lung, colon, and rectal cancer being the leading and third leading cause of cancer-related death among both men and women respectively, few studies have examined Palliative Care Consultation (PCC) on healthcare utilization (HCU) in individuals with advanced stage diagnosis in this disease cohort. Extant research shows advanced stage cancer patients receive aggressive treatments, within the last 30 days of life. Palliative care is linked to less aggressive cancer treatment, and palliative interventions applied early, at diagnosis of advanced cancer, is more favorable for improving symptom and disease management. Patients and family members with early PCC are better informed …

Increasing Low-Dose Ct Screening In Primary Care, Bethany Huelskoetter Dec 2021

Increasing Low-Dose Ct Screening In Primary Care, Bethany Huelskoetter

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Abstract

Lung cancer was ranked as the second most common cancer diagnosed in 2020 and had the highest death rate compared to all other cancers, excluding nonmelanoma skin cancers (ACS). Early detection is key in decreasing the mortality of lung cancer. A low dose CT (LDCT) is a yearly screening tool developed to detect lung cancer early in high-risk patients yet is much underutilized in primary care. The purpose of this project is to increase the number of LDCT orders placed for qualified patients to decrease the lung cancer mortality rate. There were two main methods for this project: education …

Residential Radon Exposure, Its Contribution To Lung Cancer, And Social Determinants Of Radon Testing, Stacy Stanifer Jan 2020

Residential Radon Exposure, Its Contribution To Lung Cancer, And Social Determinants Of Radon Testing, Stacy Stanifer

Theses and Dissertations--Nursing

Lung cancer is a highly preventable form of cancer. Cigarette smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer followed by radon gas exposure and exposure to secondhand smoke. Kentucky leads the nation in both incidence and mortality from lung cancer. Tobacco use in Kentucky continues to be a major public health concern as nearly one-quarter of adults report current tobacco use and just over one-third of Kentucky homes with children lack rules which prohibit smoking in the home. Radon, a colorless, odorless radioactive gas, occurs naturally from the decay of uranium found in rocks and soil and is harmful when …

Clinicians’ Perspectives On Adopting A Lung Cancer Palliative Care Intervention, Shaunna Siler Jun 2017

Clinicians’ Perspectives On Adopting A Lung Cancer Palliative Care Intervention, Shaunna Siler

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Despite the significant progress in implementing palliative care interventions for cancer patients, few intervention studies seek healthcare clinicians’ input prior to implementation. The purpose of this research was then to explore palliative care and oncology clinicians’ (e.g., physicians, nurses, social workers, and chaplains) perspectives on current challenges and useful practices in meeting the quality of life needs of lung cancer patients and family caregivers, and to increase the likelihood of the adoption of a palliative care intervention based on understanding current trends in palliative care delivery at three outpatient oncology sites. The conceptual framework used for this study was the …

Dyspnea: Effect Of Auricular Acupressure In End Stage Lung Cancer Patients, A Pilot Feasibility Study, Roger Alan Strong Phd Apr 2008

Dyspnea: Effect Of Auricular Acupressure In End Stage Lung Cancer Patients, A Pilot Feasibility Study, Roger Alan Strong Phd

Dissertations

Introduction: Dyspnea is a debilitating symptom, common in advanced lung cancer patients, and poorly controlled. The National Institutes of Health has promoted the need for research regarding end of life care symptom control. Purpose: Conduct a feasibility study evaluating auricular acupressure effects on dyspnea in hospice lung cancer patients. Theoretical framework: The UCSF School of Nursing Symptom Management Faculty Group's Model for Symptom Management was used for the conceptual framework. The model includes three dimensions: symptom experience, symptom management strategies, and symptom outcomes. The Human Energy Field Theory provided context for using auricular acupressure. Aim: Conduct a pilot study evaluating …
