Does The Enhanced Recovery Pathway Decrease Length Of Stay And Readmission Rates In Patients Undergoing Gynecologic Surgery?, Trinh T. Nguyen

Doctoral Projects

The Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) pathway promotes an early recovery after surgery using an evidence-based multidisciplinary approach. The ERAS protocol is aimed at standardizing care to improve patient outcomes. There is consistent evidence that ERAS pathways reduce hospital length of stay (LOS) and readmission rates, decrease healthcare costs, and improve patient satisfaction and outcomes. By attenuating the surgical stress response and supporting the return of physiological function, the ERAS pathway achieves its effectiveness. This scholarly project aimed to evaluate how ERAS improves patient outcomes in gynecology patients at a county hospital. A standardized method for improving patient recovery was …

Enhanced Discharge Preparation To Decrease Discharge Delays: A Quality Improvement Project, Angela Graham Apr 2023

Enhanced Discharge Preparation To Decrease Discharge Delays: A Quality Improvement Project, Angela Graham

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Increased length of stay (LOS) is a focus in hospitals as it has implications for decreased quality of care, increased cost of care, and results in care delays for other patients (Rojas-Garcia et al., 2018). LOS is a measure of a hospital’s efficiency and throughput, which is the process of admitting, treating, and discharging patients. Micallef et al. (2020) found a longer LOS can occur from having extra days due to inefficiency in delivering care or from delays in discharge once the patient no longer needs acute care. The longer a patient stays in the hospital, the greater the risk …

Transient Ischemic Attack And Admission To A Dedicated Unit, Bandi Davini Nov 2022

Transient Ischemic Attack And Admission To A Dedicated Unit, Bandi Davini

Student Scholarly Projects

Transient ischemic attacks account for admissions of approximately 70% of patients who present to the emergency department with transient vascular symptoms, with an average length of stay of one to seven days, costing, on average, $22,087 (Qureshi et al., 2013). A hospital organization's bed efficiency directly affects quality metrics. Reducing the length of stay in TIA patients by having them admitted to a dedicated unit with whom the staff has experience managing stroke patients and the understanding of specific criteria needing to be met before discharge can directly impact quality metrics and provide cost-effective delivery of care. The PICOT question …

The aim of the project was to measure registered nurses and PICU providers perception of the extubation prompts and determine if the extubation prompts decrease duration of mechanical ventilation and length of stay. Methods: After extensive review of …

Securing Nasogastric Tubes In Children, Julie Ann Lavoie Jul 2021

Securing Nasogastric Tubes In Children, Julie Ann Lavoie

Dissertations (1934 -)

Nasogastric tubes (NGTs) are commonly placed in children at risk for malnutrition in order to provide temporary nutrition support until the child achieves independent oral feedings or requires durable tube placement. Accurate securement of NGTs is necessary to safely provide nutrition, particularly in infants and toddlers who are at highest risk for dislodging their NGT. Dislodgement of an NGT has a cascade effect on the medical management, requiring increased exposure to the healthcare system with every replacement. Nasal bridles are widely used to secure NGTs in adults but are not widely used with children. The purpose of this retrospective, correlational …
