Understanding and enhancing the patient experience can lead to improved healthcare outcomes. The purpose of this study was to capture a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the patient experience on an inpatient medical teaching unit in order to identify key deficiencies and unmet needs. We then aim to implement a design-thinking methodology to find innovative ways to solve these deficiencies. Here we present the first two phases of this four-phased study. We retrospectively and prospectively collected quantitative data about patient experience with the Canadian Patient Experiences Survey-Inpatient Care. Background: Evidence suggests improvement in nursing staff satisfaction, competence, and retention after implementation of evidence-based mentorship programmes. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand how English- and Spanish-speaking Hispanic patients seeking kidney and liver transplant care at a safety-net facility perceive and interpret the care experience with the goal of generating a grounded theory model to guide care delivery and improve perception of care for this population.

This descriptive study examined perceptions of hospital care in a minority majority state within adult Hispanic white, American Indian, and non-Hispanic white patients using the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey. This secondary analysis of de-identified 2016-2018 data involved 10,181 patients discharged from two urban and five rural hospitals. Demographic variables included: race/ethnicity, preferred language, and hospital location. HCAHPS variables included: overall satisfaction, willingness to recommend, nurse communication, physician communication, responsiveness of hospital staff, pain management, medication communication, cleanliness and quietness, discharge information, and transition of care. Nurse Practitioners (NP) diagnose and treat wounds and wound-related conditions based on their advanced scope of practice. An NP with graduate-level wound care education (NP(W)) gains additional knowledge and clinical experience to provide comprehensive wound care.

This research aimed to explore community patients’ access to wound care in Southwestern Ontario (Canada). A quality improvement project was initiated utilizing stakeholder feedback to develop and implement a 12-week pilot NP(W)-Led community-based wound care service; the NP(W) wound care practices, clinical outcomes, and adverse events were described. In January of 2020, a follow-up phone call quality improvement initiative was implemented by the case management department of an acute care facility located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, to improve the patients’ healthcare experience. The intent was to improve the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) scores. This quality improvement (QI) project was conducted using the Plan-Do-Check-Act Cycle along with the Kotter’s 8-step change model.
