The gut microbiome consists of normally non-pathogenic bacteria, viruses, and fungi. These friendly microbes serve to maintain GI barrier function and integrity, play a role in host nutrient and drug metabolism, immunomodulation, and prevent pathogenic bacteria from colonizing or causing disease. The importance of a healthy microbiome for the overall health of the host is just recently being appreciated within the medical and science communities. Disruption of the microbiome places one at greater risk for illness and infection. On average, each Ventilator-Associated Event (VAE) is anticipated to increase the length of stay in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), resulting in potential adverse events and cost to the organization. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) defines VAE as the increase of daily minimum positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) values, after a baseline period of patient stability or improvement on the ventilator (CDC, 2018). Standard endotracheal tube designs have led to the incidence of VAE because of the accumulation of subglottic secretions in the trachea. The addition of Nurse Practitioners (NPs) on the trauma service at night was examined to see if it has positively impacted healthcare utilization and satisfaction in trauma patients. This four-month evidence-based, quasi-experimental project took place on the Trauma Medical Surgical Unit (TMSU) at a level II trauma center in California. Retrospective analysis of medical records and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) satisfaction surveys were performed for those trauma patients located on the TMSU 60-days prior to NPs starting at night and 60-days after. Background and purpose-Exposure to adverse childhood experiences results in increased morbidity and mortality among individuals with substance use disorders. Screening for histories of childhood trauma, and integration of trauma-informed care is lacking among health care practitioners. Integrating screening for histories of childhood abuse in person’s seeking treatment for substance abuse disorders can facilitate identification of individuals interested in additional support and resources to support their recovery. Sexual assault triggers a cascade of physiological responses in victims, commonly referred to as the neurobiology of sexual assault trauma. Victims often report the inability to move or resist, memory loss, and loss of our altered feelings of consciousness – reactions which often negatively impact the perception of their credibility. Recently, the criminal justice system has begun to connect these normal, physiological responses in understanding common victim behaviors and responses. As knowledge of the neurobiology of sexual assault trauma disseminates throughout the criminal justice system, it is readily apparent that education, new protocols, and trauma informed interview techniques are required. …
