An Exploration Of The Nursing Leaders’ Experiences Addressing Indigenous Health In University Undergraduate Nursing Programs In Ontario, Danae Coggins
An Exploration Of The Nursing Leaders’ Experiences Addressing Indigenous Health In University Undergraduate Nursing Programs In Ontario, Danae Coggins
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Introduction. Although there are serious health inequities experienced by Indigenous people compared to non-Indigenous people in Canada and racism and discrimination continues to be rife in health care environments, there remains a general lack of attention to Indigenous health (IH) in health professional education programs. In response, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has recommended this be addressed within health profession education, including nursing (Truth and Reconciliation Canada, 2015). However, there is a paucity of evidence describing the challenges and facilitators to incorporating IH into nursing education.
Methodology and Methods. This qualitative study employs interpretive description approaches informed by …

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
Nursing education programs are designed to respond to the evolving requirements of nursing practice while supporting student transformation in becoming a nurse. Students in these programs often refer to them as academically challenging and stressful. The aim of this study was to understand the experience of nursing students compared to the general university student population and specifically, to explore if nursing students are perceiving more stress than students in other university programs. This study arises from an earlier study conducted annually for four years at a western Canadian university following the method referred to as the “Harvard Assessment Seminar” (Light, …

Millennial Male Associate Degree Of Nursing Students: Perceived Motivators, Benefits And Barriers, Daniela Brink
All Theses And Dissertations
There is a severe nursing shortage in the United States which affects the delivery of healthcare. The reasons for the nursing shortage are many and complex including the national movement toward healthcare reform, an aging population making greater demands on an already stressed healthcare system, and stereotypical attitudes about the work of nursing in general. While men comprise approximately half of the population, men represent only 9.6% of the nursing profession. As millennials are the current emerging workforce, this problem of a nursing shortage could be addressed by increasing the diversity of the nursing workforce to include more men from …

Given the current health care climate, it is critical for nurse educators to provide learning opportunities for students to collaborate with leaders in the community to provide much-needed services to vulnerable populations. We developed, implemented, and evaluated a process for vision screenings and referrals to a local eye center for low-income, immigrant women over three years in an urban setting in the United States. This is a report on the program, including the challenges faced by the faculty and lessons learned by the nursing students.
Comparing Interprofessional Socialization In Mixed Discipline And Nursing Student Only Cohorts, Kara Groom
Comparing Interprofessional Socialization In Mixed Discipline And Nursing Student Only Cohorts, Kara Groom
Dissertations (1934 -)
A main cause of patient safety incidents are avoidable failures in communication between health professionals. In response, healthcare has entered an era of interprofessionalism in education and patient care. A challenge to substantiating the value of interprofessional education (IPE) has been a limited number of studies that assess the effectiveness of IPE interventions compared to education interventions in which professions were learning separately from one another. This research project helps fill this gap and measures the differences in student interprofessional socialization (IS) between an IPE cohort and a usual care group of one-discipline learners. The purpose was to compare IS …

The purpose of this project is to enhance the clinical nurse leader (CNL) nursing students’ learning experiences through simulation education, ensure that their learning outcomes meet course objectives, and increase students’ recognition of educational best practices in simulation.
This summer semester, the number of students in the obstetric course doubled and the course was changed from four scenarios held over two simulation days for four pre-licensure students each class to five simulation days with eight to ten students in attendance each class period. While the old student-to-instructor ratio was three to four to one, the new ratio is nine to …
Evaluation Of Educating Registered Nurses Prior To Implementing New Evidence-Based Protocol: Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (Eras), Lisa Brooks
Dissertations
Evidence-based protocols promote standardization of care and patient safety. The inclusion of major stakeholders is imperative to the success of implementation of a new protocol. The “Enhanced Recovery After Surgery” (ERAS) protocol was implemented at the Veterans Administration Medical Center – St. Louis prior to formal education of direct-care registered nurses (RNs), a major stakeholder group. Due to the lack of knowledge, the RNs who were expected to implement and adhere to the ERAS protocol were not prepared and displayed a lack of confidence. Subsequently, an educational training intervention was designed and executed with thirty-five RN participants. Prior to this …
Implementation Of A Scripted Debriefing Tool In Simulation-Based Nursing, Mary Kidd
Implementation Of A Scripted Debriefing Tool In Simulation-Based Nursing, Mary Kidd
DNP Scholarly Projects
In nursing education, simulation represents real patient scenarios that are designed to enable students to practice combining theoretical knowledge with clinical skills within a controlled environment (Bland, Topping, & Wood, 2011). Debriefing is a facilitated reflection of the simulation experience and is performed to uncover relationships among the events, actions, thought processes and outcomes with the intention of improving future practice (Cheng et al., 2014; Kolbe, Grande, & Spahn, 2015). Without proper debriefing, erroneous critical thinking, decision-making, and clinical judgement may go uncorrected, potentially negatively impacting patient care. There is an abundance of literature on debriefing methods; yet, empirical evidence …

Decreasing Simulation Anxiety In Nursing Education, Kimberly Byler
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project
The purpose of this quantitative research project was to examine the efficacy of pre-simulation progressive muscle relaxation in decreasing the level of anxiety experienced by nursing students during simulation exercises. Simulation is an important teaching strategy in nursing education; it provides an arena in which to practice skills and decision-making without putting real patients in danger of any mistakes. Student anxiety is a challenge of the simulation teaching strategy, because it can make students feel unsuccessful. Decreasing student anxiety will be important as simulation is used more frequently in nursing education. Our study assessed students’ anxiety before simulation and the …

Improving Professionalism In New Graduate Nursing Behavior, Debra Brendley
Improving Professionalism In New Graduate Nursing Behavior, Debra Brendley
Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects
Professional behavior in nursing is a difficult term to define. There are generational, cultural, and regional aspects that affect the definition of this concept. Nursing, as in other professions, has a set of behaviors it has deemed necessary to guide practice. Professionalism is paramount in that it guides the nurse’s behavior in patient care, in collaboration with healthcare team members, and in serving the community. There is a direct correlation between professional behavior in nursing practice and positive patient outcomes. Unprofessionalism has been noted as an issue in nursing, including the new graduate nurse population. This project sought to develop …

Concept-based curricula are being implemented in nursing education as a means to shift the emphasis from content to an emphasis on concepts and conceptual learning (Giddens & Brady, 2007). This paradigm shift requires concomitant changes in how faculty teach and how students learn. In concept-based curricula, teachers use student-centered learning activities, such as case studies, questions, or problems to engage students in active learning (Giddens, Caputi, & Rodgers, 2015).

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière
The purpose of this qualitative research was to utilize an Institutional Ethnographic (IE) lens to trace how various institutional (regulatory, educational, union, governmental, or health authority) texts and resources organize baccalaureate (RN) and diploma (vocational or practical) nurses’ experiences of learning to practice on acute care teams. Functional care models have been introduced in acute care, creating RN-LPN-health care aide (HCA) teams in conjunction with expanded practice scopes for LPNs. Questions arise as to how nurses (RNs and LPNs) learn to work together on these intra-professional teams. Beginning from the standpoint of front-line workers provides an entry-point into understanding how …
