PURPOSE: Human trafficking is an ongoing public health issue on a global and local platform. The care of victims is unique and multifaceted, with various physical and mental health care needs recognized. Human trafficking victims are often difficult to identify, as there have been reports that up to 88% of human trafficking survivors described encounters with healthcare professionals while they were being trafficked yet none were identified as victims (Office of Trafficking in Persons, 2017). Back injury in nursing is a significant concern for the health of the worker, the costs to the healthcare system, and the safety of the patients. Current injury prevention measures include ergonomic adjustments to the work environment, the use of mechanical lifting equipment, policies to limit manual handling of patients, and the teaching of lifting techniques. These measures have been met with limited success in reducing injury rates. Little is known about whether changing the lifting biomechanics used in the healthcare setting can lower high injury rates across the profession.

Stigma regarding mental illness is common throughout the world, and can lead to social isolation, low self-esteem, loss of income and employment, deterioration of life quality, impeded access to medical care, and a shorter lifespan for people diagnosed with a mental illness (Cleary, Deacon, Jackson, Andrew, & Chan, 2012; Corrigan et al., 2013). The purpose of this DNP project was to provide an evidence-based intervention called In Our Own Voice (IOOV) to first semester sophomore nursing students and assess its impact on their perceptions of mental illness stigma.
