Diabetes impacts the lives of millions of Americans, and the number is growing rapidly every year. Diabetes education has been demonstrated to have a positive impact of the self-management of this chronic disease and effective in the reduction of A1C, weight, and blood pressure. Barriers to attendance at both diabetes education classes and provider appointments are varied with lack of transportation and available time cited as two of the many reasons, especially in the rural and medically underserved regions of the country. There is a need to understand the roles coping strategies play in enhancing resilience in adolescents and young adults with type 1 diabetes between the ages of 18-30. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between and among positive, protective coping strategies (courageous coping), negative coping strategies (defensive coping), and resilience. The Resilience in Illness Model (Haase, Kinter, Monahan, & Robb, 2014) was the theoretical model which guided this research.

Background

Poor glycemic control (HbA1c >8) overtime leads to microvascular and macrovascular complications after the first and third years respectively, ultimately resulting in death after five years (Karter, 2016). Current Kaiser Permanente (KP) data stratified by race, ethnicity, age, and gender shows a significant disparity gap between Hispanics/Latino and Caucasian populations. The Pursuing IHI initiative is over a 2-year period completed at a microsystem that is focusing on health equity practices to reduce disparity gaps.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate school nurses’ perspectives related to interprofessional collaboration to support health promotion and development of self-management skills of students with diabetes.

Method: A link to an on-line survey was sent to 312 school nurses. The survey included 11 items pertaining to the nurses’ perceptions.

Results: The majority of the respondents (91.8%, n = 56) reported that instruction and maintenance of diabetes self-management skills would benefit from an interprofessional team. The purpose of this project was to implement the American Diabetes Association (ADA) foot assessment guidelines utilizing an electronic medical record (EMR) template. Aims of this evidence based practice (EBP) project were to improve documentation of the comprehensive diabetic foot exam, increase identification of loss of protective sensation (LOPS), and increase podiatry and vascular surgery referrals. Diabetes Mellitus (DM) causes many health complications. The lifetime risk of foot ulceration in diabetic patients is 25%. Purpose: To evaluate the effectiveness of a text messaging program (TMP) to improve glucose control, retinopathy screening (RS) rates, and self-care behaviors in patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes.

Methods: A single-group design with a quasi-systematic random sample (n=20) received educational/exhortational text messages on their cellular phones for 3 months. Subjects, 12 of whom identified as a minority ethnicity, were mostly male, aged 27-73 years.

Results: Glucose control and RS rates improved significantly. Subjects (>70%) reported changes in self-care behaviors.

Conclusion: Leveraging ubiquitous technology, a TMP for patients with limited access to healthcare education, holds promise

Many health care clinics lack consistent use of culturally competent educational interventions when providing diabetes education to Latinos. The prevalence of diabetes in the United States in 2015 was 30.3 million people; which is the equivalent of 9.4% of the population. It is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality.
