Perceptions Of Marijuana Use Among Adolescents, Kofi Amoah, James Baffoe, Katherine Distel, Matt Madden, Jordan Thomas, Insang Yang
Pharmacy and Nursing Student Research and Evidence-Based Medicine Poster Session
Background
The United States federal government has been discouraging use of marijuana for decades. Prior to 1970, the federal regulation of marijuana use was through taxes. In 1970, marijuana use was deemed a criminal offense, and overrode any states that considered it legal. In 2012, Colorado and Washington were the first two states to legalize marijuana for recreational use. A study found adolescent use was 8.68% higher in states allowing medical marijuana and had a significantly lower perception of risks associated with marijuana use (6.94%).
Objectives
To determine if an educational program about the effects of marijuana use can negatively …
Social Disruption And Physical Limitation Related To Quality Of Life Of Adolescents With Asthma, Jennifer L. Baumgardner
Social Disruption And Physical Limitation Related To Quality Of Life Of Adolescents With Asthma, Jennifer L. Baumgardner
Kaleidoscope
During adolescence, teenagers experience many physical, emotional, and social changes. Teenagers with chronic conditions, however, may face challenges in normal adolescent development because their illness can impact body image, independence, and peer socialization. Little is known about the effect of asthma on adolescent quality of life (QOL). In this paper, I review the existing literature on social disruption and physical limitations related to asthma and the subsequent impact on adolescent asthma QOL. In addition, adolescent issues leading to poor control of asthma symptoms and interventions to improve asthma QOL for adolescents are addressed.

Wecan Implementation For Parents Of At-Risk Hispanic Adolescents In Middle School, Shannon Leigh Devita
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
Abstract
CDC-reported childhood obesity rates have tripled in the past three years. Among children in grades five, seven and nine, 30% are overweight or obese, with Hispanic students more likely to be overweight than White students. This evidence-based project examined the effectiveness of NHLBI’s WeCan! for at-risk middle-school-age Hispanic children and parents. The program was implemented at school in two weekly sessions, and its effectiveness was evaluated using the WeCan! survey. The program resulted in improved knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes related energy balance, portion size, healthy foods, physical activity, and screen time and may be useful in other school settings.
Emergency Protocol Program For High School Athletes, Casandra B. Moyer
Emergency Protocol Program For High School Athletes, Casandra B. Moyer
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts
This evidence-based project (EBP) involved development and implementation of an emergency protocol (EP) education program for high school athletes and coaches at a southern California high school. A Doctor of Nursing Practice student, collaborating with health care and athletic personnel, conducted an assessment of the high school’s EPs for management of asthma, anaphylaxis, diabetes, and heat illness. Then, an EP and educational program were created; coaches and athletes were educated on the protocol during a coaches’ meeting and practice times, respectively. All participants completed pre- and post-tests, and mean knowledge scores were compared. The overall knowledge score increased by 10% …
The Relationships Among School Nurse To Student Ratios, Self-Efficacy For Type 1 Diabetes Management, And Glycemic Control In Adolescents, Lori Wilt
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is one of the most common chronic diseases of childhood. Adolescents with T1DM experience decreased treatment adherence, poor glycemic control, and acute complications more frequently than adults. Self-efficacy is the belief that one can carry out specific behaviors in specific situations and is the major determinant of intention, and has been shown to influence diabetes self-management in the adolescent.
School nurses are in a unique position to influence self-efficacy for type 1 diabetes management in adolescents. Although previous research has shown that school nurses positively influence student health outcomes in a variety of ways, there …
Transitioning Teens With Diabetes To Adult Healthcare, Rebecca Ann Meyer
Transitioning Teens With Diabetes To Adult Healthcare, Rebecca Ann Meyer
Dissertations
Adolescents must enter adult health care services at age 18, yet most are not ready and have not mastered daily self management of their type 1 diabetes. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of a transition planning intervention, focused on educating adolescent/parent dyads about diabetes self management in preparation for the transition from pediatric to adult health care, using a newly developed transition plan and framework. The setting was a diabetes endocrinology clinic where 95% of young type 1 diabetics in the metropolitan area are seen. The intervention included supporting the parent in the relinquishing of …
Breastfeeding Education For Adolescent Mothers, Emily Osgood
Breastfeeding Education For Adolescent Mothers, Emily Osgood
Nursing Masters
Purpose: The WHO, AAP, and DHHS recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life and continued supplementary breastfeeding until two years of age. Breastfeeding initiation and duration rates are low worldwide, particularly among the adolescent population. The national initiation rate for teen mothers is only 43%, as compared to their adult counterparts at 73.9%; and at six months, only 19% of those teenagers were still breastfeeding.
The objective of this research project is to develop a prenatal educational program geared toward the adolescent population at a local community hospital.
Study Design and Methods: This breastfeeding educational program was …
Health Education To Decrease Obesity In Adolescents With Asthma, Mitzie Eumarie Thomas
Health Education To Decrease Obesity In Adolescents With Asthma, Mitzie Eumarie Thomas
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Obesity increases asthma severity and is costing the health care industry a significant amount of money. Decreasing adolescents' obesity will decrease the risk for chronic health problems, which can have a significant impact in adulthood. Implementing a school-based health education program can decrease the prevalence of obesity amongst adolescents. This program will be implemented by school nurses in the after-school program at Public School 59 (P.S) in New York City. The purpose of this project is to develop adolescents' school-based obesity prevention policies and documentation which will focus on increasing their nutrition education, increasing physical activities, and providing skills to …

Adolescent Risk Behaviors, Screening, And Referral At An Adolescent Health Clinic: A Retrospective Review, Cheryl Marrs
DNP Projects
Aim: Investigate provider patterns of risk behavior screening at an adolescent health clinic and describe findings from a study that investigated patterns of risk behavior screening in an adolescent health clinic.
Background: Adolescents who engage in risky behaviors are vulnerable to problems with current and future mental health issues such as depression, substance use, or other psychiatric disorders. Identifying the risky behaviors in adolescents that are associated with the potential presence of depressive symptoms can be helpful to the provider when deciding to refer an adolescent for further mental health assessment. Provider fidelity in risk behavior screening is central to …
