Hispanic Mothers' Normative Beliefs And Intentions About The Discussion Of Sex-Related Topics With Their Adolescent Daughters, Dana M. Rodriguez Oct 2014

Hispanic Mothers' Normative Beliefs And Intentions About The Discussion Of Sex-Related Topics With Their Adolescent Daughters, Dana M. Rodriguez

Dissertations (1934 -)

Hispanic adolescent females continue to have rates of pregnancy and STIs, which exceed those of white non-Hispanic peers. When mothers engage in the discussion of sex-related topics (DSRTs) with their adolescent daughters, it has been shown to delay or decrease sexual intercourse. However, it has been found that Hispanic parents talk less with their daughters about sex-related topics (SRTs) when compared to other ethnic groups. Understanding why Hispanic mothers may or may not intend to engage in DSRTs is important in order to design culturally appropriate programs aimed at increasing their DSRTs. A sequential mixed-methods predictive correlational design framed by …

Determining The Correlation Between Hemoglobin Levels And The Quality Of Life Of Adolecents And Young Adults On Hemodialysis: A Descriptive Correlational Study, Carlisa Waldman

Master of Science in Nursing Theses

Background: End stage renal disease (ESRD) is a permanent condition where the kidneys are unable to function at a level acceptable to sustain life. Dialysis or kidney transplantation are some of the treatments available to maintain patients’ health and well-being. The prevalence of adolescent and young adult patients living with end stage renal disease (ESRD) is increasing. According to the United States Renal Data System (2013), there are over 7,500 patients ages 19 years or younger with ESRD. More than 1,400 of these patients are receiving hemodialysis, this is a national increase of 10.1% for this age group from …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Comparison Of Medication Efficacy And Cost, Robert M. David, Karlen E. Luthy, Janelle L. B. Macintosh, Lacey M. Eden Jun 2014

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: Comparison Of Medication Efficacy And Cost, Robert M. David, Karlen E. Luthy, Janelle L. B. Macintosh, Lacey M. Eden

Student Works

Although a common psychological disorder, pharmacological treatment of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder can be a costly endeavor. Among 4-5 year olds, methylphenidate is a safe, efficacious, and cost-effective option for short-, intermediate-, and long-acting medication options. Short-acting methylphenidate, intermediate-acting methylphenidate ER and SR, and long-acting methylphenidate LA are the most efficacious and cost-effective medications. Selection of non-stimulant medications should be based upon recommended guidelines rather than primarily on cost. For children incapable of swallowing pills, the most efficacious and cost-effective treatments are short-acting dextroamphetamine liquid and long-acting methylphenidate LA capsules that can be opened and sprinkled over food.

Family Presence During Trauma Resuscitation: Ready For Primetime?, Mae Pasquale, Michael Pasquale, Leslie Baga, Sherrine Eid, Jane Leske

Michael D Pasquale MD, FACS, FCCM

BACKGROUND: The concept of family presence during trauma resuscitation (FPTR) remains controversial. Healthcare providers have expressed concern that resuscitation of severely injured trauma patients is inappropriate for family members as they may have psychologic distress, disrupt resuscitative efforts, or misinterpret provider actions, which can ultimately impact satisfaction with care. The minimal evidence that exists is descriptive or anecdotal.

METHODS: Using a previously developed FPTR protocol, a prospective, comparative study assessing 50 adult family members, who were present (n = 25) or not present (n = 25) with their severely injured adult family member during resuscitation, was conducted. Family member anxiety …

Role Of The "Tobacco Free Teens" Mobile Application In Adolescent Smoking, Juawanna L. Schuller

DNP Projects

Adolescent tobacco use rates have plateaued. Tobacco use education is not mandatory in all states, yet schools remain a good opportunity to reach this population. School nurses should be able to identify components of effective tobacco use prevention education programs and learn to overcome barriers to implementation of these programs. The "Tobacco Free Teens" mobile application is a novel tool that may decrease adolescent tobacco use rates. A pilot study found that the Tobacco Free Teens mobile application was satisfactory to most participants but appealed to girls more than boys. Further research is needed to determine the effectiveness of this …
