Decreasing Intent To Leave In Nurse Residents (Nr) With The Addition Of Wellness Interventions: A Quality Improvement Project, Susan Eckman

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

The US nursing workforce decreased 1.8 percent between 2019 and 2021, marking the largest drop seen in four decades. New nurses or nurse residents NRs) are included in this loss. Many nurses, but particularly new nurses, experience burnout. If workplace stress is not managed, it can become chronic. The first year of employment as a nurse has been shown to be a very vulnerable time. Within the first 2 years of nurses’ employment, there is a reduction in commitment along with increased stress. New graduate nurses’ lack of life experiences, along with the recent pandemic have contributed to more than …

An Interprofessional Prediabetes And Diabetes Self--Management Education Quality Improvement Project Among Vulnerable Populations At A Tuberculosis Hospital, Robert Saul Castro Natal

Doctor of Nursing Practice

Background. Patients greatly benefit from diabetes self-management education (DSME) as it boosts knowledge and self-efficacy, decreases body weight, fasting blood sugar, and hemoglobin A1C levels, and improves overall health outcomes in a cost-effective manner. Unfortunately, many individuals with prediabetes and diabetes who qualify for DSMEs do not attend these classes nor receive sufficient prediabetes and diabetes support elsewhere to attain guideline recommended metrics. However, individuals from vulnerable populations and without DSME education experience disproportionate diabetes-related complications worsening health outcomes. Aims: Increase general prediabetes and diabetes knowledge, facilitate behavior change, improve glycemic, metabolic, and lipid values, and increase …

Reducing Admissions Of Adult Congestive Heart Failure Patients In The Acute Care Setting, Jamekia Calhoun Jul 2022

Reducing Admissions Of Adult Congestive Heart Failure Patients In The Acute Care Setting, Jamekia Calhoun

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Background: Heart failure (HF) is a clinical diagnosis that affects about 1 to 2% of the population worldwide. Poor education regarding self-care behaviors after discharge has contributed to increased readmissions after acute hospitalization. Hospital readmissions cost is approximately one hundred thousand dollars. This increase in cost has forced the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Service (CMS) to place penalties on organizations with high readmission rates. The organization may be penalized for increases in readmission rates by decreasing the percentage of the combined total Medicare payments received from the CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services [CMS], 2021)

Purpose: …

A Qualitative Study On Nurse Facilitators Of Mind-Body Skills Groups, Paula D. Blake-Beckford

Mindfulness Studies Theses

The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM), founded by Dr. James Gordon, provides communities with evidence-based Mind-Body Skills Groups (MBSGs) that foster self-care, self-awareness, and self-expression. MBSGs range from 8 to 12-week series on various mind-body practices wherein group members meet, practice, and reflect on the impact of mind-body skills in their lives. Research has demonstrated that participants in MBSGs have positive outcomes. Healthcare professionals (HCPs), especially nurses, gain resiliency from MBSGs. As facilitators of MBSGs, nurses develop essential skills transferable to clinical and educational settings. MBSGs are therapeutic for adult participants with chronic stress. Prior to this thesis, only one …

Improving Self-Care Awareness Among Undergraduate Nursing Students, D'Anna Helms

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

The purpose of this DNP project was to improve self-care (SC) awareness among undergraduate nursing students by educating on the use of constructive SC activities. Twenty-two senior level nursing students attended an educational seminar, completed the Mindful Self-Care Scale – Clinical (MSCS-C) pre- and post-survey, and reflective journaling. A paired-samples t test was calculated to compare the mean pretest score to the mean posttest score. The mean on the pretest was 77.68 (sd= 9.33), and the mean on the posttest was 75.27 (sd= 31.59). A significant increase from pretest to posttest was found (t (21) = .307, p < .05). Thematical analysis revealed enhanced awareness and incorporation of constructive SC activities. Educational interventions which seek to improve SC awareness will generate practical and sustainable acts of SC, thus improving students’ overall success and further empowering students in their transition from graduate to licensed nurses.

Developing Resiliency Knowledge In New Graduate Nurses Through Self-Care Education, Keera Byrd

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

During the transition to practice, new graduate nurses (NGNs) face conflict and uncertainty influenced by lack of resiliency and self-care knowledge. In a rural hospital, NGNs had minimal standardized guidance during the transition to practice. Without a proper understanding of resiliency and self-care knowledge, NGNs could not adapt to change and risked leaving the profession or harming patients. A self-care staff education project was developed to improve knowledge of resiliency in a group of NGNs. Self-care deficit theory provided the framework for the project. Sources of evidence published between 2017 and 2022 were used as well as previously analyzed data …
