Practice Problem: Patients with increased ventilator days see dramatic increases in their chances of developing healthcare-related conditions (HAC). Extended ICU stays increase the potential for problematic issues in patients' physical, mental and spiritual health with short-and-long-term consequences.

Human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is an effective public health tool to decrease the rates of HPV-related cancers in our communities. Vaccine hesitancy can undermine this effort, and interventions are needed to inform and assist individuals/parents in decision-making to receive vaccines. The COVID-19 pandemic and newly developed vaccines have increased attention and made families hesitant about vaccines. Receiving a provider's strong recommendation for the vaccine is one of the strongest predictors of HPV vaccine uptake. Problem: Sepsis is a leading cause of death worldwide, and the second most common cause of death in cancer patients. Early management of sepsis through use of sepsis bundles have been shown to improve patient outcomes, yet bundle adherence is unfortunately inconsistent.

Methods: A two-nurse team, called the Sepsis Sidekicks, was a process improvement initiative to increase compliance with the center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) sepsis bundle and improve patient outcomes related to sepsis. The observational quality improvement project utilized a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) model over a six-week period where quantitative data was collected using a retrospective chart review. …

Occupational injuries are disturbingly common and can occur regardless of employment industry, given that virtually every job in every industry has some degree of risk. Literature suggests that once an injury has occurred, psychosocial factors such as depression can play a pivotal role in the progression of pain, determine whether a subsequent disability develops, and the length of time an employee is off work.

Background: Patient portals are available through many healthcare offices. They offer the opportunity to improve patient engagement and quality of patient care, but few patients enroll. At a small rural primary care office, less than 20% of the patients were enrolled in the patient portal.

Objective: The purpose of this quality improvement project was to address the barriers reported by patients at this clinic and determine whether changes in portal enrollment volume occurred. Reported barriers included a lack of knowledge about the portal and difficulties with the sign-up process.

A pressure injury (PI) is a condition in which prolonged pressure or shear causes localized damage to the soft tissue and skin and is usually over a bony prominence (National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP), 2016). PIs can increase morbidity and mortality, increase length of stay, increase infection rates, increase healthcare costs and decrease quality of life (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), n.d.; Coyer et al., 2017).
