Improving Measurements And Self-Management Skills Of Cardiovascular Disease By Incorporating A Healthy Lifestyle In Hispanic Adults: A Promotoras Led Program, Kelly Llewellyn

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Manuscripts

Hispanic community members face unique challenges related to language barriers, culture, access to care, and trust in healthcare providers. Hispanic community members have a higher incidence of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes than their non-Hispanic counterparts. Hispanic males were most likely to die of cardiovascular disease in 2017 (CDC, n.d.a), and for females, death from cardiovascular disease was only second to cancer (CDC, n.d.b.). Hispanics are 70% more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes than non-Hispanics (Office of Minority Health, nd.) Promotoras are trusted members of the Hispanic community who can assist healthcare providers in providing disease prevention education and self-management …

It is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia. Causes are impaired insulin secretion, resistance to the peripheral action of insulin, or both. There are three types of diabetes: type 1, type 2, and gestational. Type 2 DM accounts for around 90% of all cases of DM. In type 2 DM, the body's response to insulin diminishes causing insulin resistance. It is commonly seen in people older than 45 years old but increasingly seen …

Benefits Of Fasting In Adults Long Term, Talea Jones May 2022

Benefits Of Fasting In Adults Long Term, Talea Jones

Nursing | Senior Theses

In nursing education, we are often taught that through diet, exercise and medications one is able to live a healthy life. Fasting is not a subject that readily comes to mind as a way to prevent chronic illnesses from occurring. However, for years, cultures have used fasting as a way to replenish themselves and to clean themselves as if they were new beings. Nursing education does not highlight the process of fasting in any way close to the extent that medications are prescribed to control illnesses.

There are many types of fasting that are used in the United States. Fasting …

Evaluation Of A Hands-On Cooking Class And Its Effects On Self-Efficacy In Relation To Healthy Eating In Type 2 Diabetics, Codi A. Jenshak-Gorzinski

DNP Scholarly Projects

The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes is alarming and poses a great threat to U.S. national health. Chronic diabetes can lead to serious conditions such as heart attack and stroke, and can result in premature mortality (World Health Organization, 2018). Diabetes can be prevented or treated by eating a healthy diet. Cooking classes are a potential way to improve American’s knowledge of nutritional principles and help them become confident that they have the capacity to eat a healthy diet. The purpose of this DNP project was to determine if participation in cooking classes enhanced self-efficacy as it pertains to healthy …

Care Coordination And Empowerment In People With Type 2 Diabetes, Erik M. Wilson

College of Nursing and Health Sciences Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Project Publications

  1. Background: In 2018, approximately one in seven Americans had been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, a number that is projected to increase to one in three by 2050. Approximately 40% of individuals with Type 2 diabetes develop long-term complications, accounting for one-in-four healthcare dollars spent in the United States. Weight Management Clinical Practice Guidelines For The Obese, Pre-Diabetic, And Diabetic Population, Dawn Williams

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

AbstractDiabetes is among chronic or lifestyle-related illnesses posing health care challenges at epidemic proportions, pressuring health care systems infrastructure for positive outcome-driven practices and sustainable costs, as continued research suggests that obese people are up to 80 times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. In June 2021, a weight-loss and wellness center serving this high-risk population established recommended guidelines for Hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) screening and education. During the initial 3 months of implementation, data findings captured 37% in a total of 220 with elevated HbA1C levels. The gap in practice is that the Wellness Center did not have a …

A Preoperative Intervention To Improve Glycemic Control In Surgical Patients With Diabetes, Kelsey L. Boyd Jan 2022

A Preoperative Intervention To Improve Glycemic Control In Surgical Patients With Diabetes, Kelsey L. Boyd

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports

Perioperative hyperglycemia is reported in 20-40% of patients undergoing general surgery and is an independent risk factor for negative surgical outcomes. Patients with diabetes presenting to a local community hospital are at risk for negative surgical outcomes due to the lack of strategies to prevent perioperative hyperglycemia. This project aimed to implement and evaluate the usefulness of succinct diabetes education for preoperative total joint surgical patients with diabetes. The intervention was a nurse-led, face-to-face diabetes education session provided to total joint surgical patients with diabetes during a preoperative evaluation appointment, compared to usual care (no preoperative diabetes education). This project …

The vast majority of diabetics are treated in primary care, positioning primary care as a center focus for diabetes related screening and treatment.

Local problem: Low rates of diabetic nephropathy screening were noted at an academic medical center affiliated primary care clinic. A quality improvement initiative was elicited to increase the number of urine microalbumin creatine …
