Pregnant Hispanic females have been disproportionately impacted by SARS-CoV-2 andhave experienced high rates of asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic, unrecognized infection. Acute SARS-CoV-2 infection has been associated with gut microbiome changes and altered peripherally circulating cytokine levels in symptomatic, non-pregnant individuals.

This study investigated the seroprevalence of anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies in a sample of pregnant Hispanic females (n = 197). In San Diego County, 44.7% of COVID-19 cases are among Hispanic/Latinxs compared to 31.1% Whites. Community-centered, culturally tailored vaccine programs are essential to close the gap in COVID-19 disparities. Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) offers hope for patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome when other treatment methods fail. However, ECMO requires continuous hourly management leading to extremely high operating costs. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the high number of patients on ECMO led to a significant increase in the costs when using perfusionists to manage ECMO. Switching to a nurse-driven model resulted in a 52% decrease in costs related to the hourly management. Changing to a nurse-driven program provided increased nursing support and sustainability, and with determination and support, other ECMO centers can change to nurse-driven programs too.

Problem: Nursing burnout has been an existing phenomenon, which the COVID-19 pandemic has only exacerbated. Burnout has contributed to escalated mental health concerns, increased staff turnover rates, and the nationwide nursing shortage.

Context: Studies indicate that depression, anxiety, and stress significantly correlate to burnout; studies also reveal that burnout consequently contributes to job dissatisfaction and organizational turnover.
