Abstract

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in children between the ages of 10-19 years. Most people who die by suicide have visited a healthcare provider within the prior year. Inpatient healthcare providers, particularly clinical nurse leaders (CNLs), are in a strategic position to assess adolescents for suicide risk regardless of their admitting diagnosis. “To ASQ or Not to ASQ” is an evidence-based project aimed at improving compliance with the Ask Suicide Screening Questions (ASQ) in an eight-bed medical-surgical adult and pediatric overflow intensive care unit (MSICU) in a large tertiary 629-bed academic medical center. Despite a worsening obesity epidemic and despite the American Medical Association (AMA) declaring Obesity a disease (2013), few assessment tools exist that assist practitioners who are charged with identifying risk for development of OW/OB in children. The Center for Health Statistics (2017) reported a 40% rate in obesity in the adult population and 18.5% in children in the U.S. Successful weight loss maintenance after 1 to 2 years of non-invasive treatment is less than 1%, indicating obesity is nearly incurable, making prevention imperative. The number of recreation and sports-related concussions (SRC) are estimated at 3.8 million every year in the United States. Recently, widespread media attention has been paid to concussion, and with this there has been a rise in adolescents with SRC seeking health care. The Center for Disease Control ranked suicide as the second leading cause of death for American adolescents (2015). This crisis of adolescent suicide warrants evaluation and improvement of current suicide prevention practices. The Emergency Department (ED) offers 24-hour services and may be the only organized healthcare for utilized by some individuals.
