To Asq Or Not To Asq: A Suicide Risk Screening Improvement Project, Gina Mumper Dec 2017

To Asq Or Not To Asq: A Suicide Risk Screening Improvement Project, Gina Mumper

Master's Projects and Capstones

Abstract

Suicide is the second leading cause of death in children between the ages of 10-19 years. Most people who die by suicide have visited a healthcare provider within the prior year. Inpatient healthcare providers, particularly clinical nurse leaders (CNLs), are in a strategic position to assess adolescents for suicide risk regardless of their admitting diagnosis. “To ASQ or Not to ASQ” is an evidence-based project aimed at improving compliance with the Ask Suicide Screening Questions (ASQ) in an eight-bed medical-surgical adult and pediatric overflow intensive care unit (MSICU) in a large tertiary 629-bed academic medical center. Methods included convenience …

Validation Of The Electronic Kids Dietary Index (E-Kindex) Screening Tool For Early Identification Of Risk For Overweight/Obesity (Ow/Ob) In A Pediatric Population: Associations With Quality Of Life Perceptions, Patricia A. Hall Nov 2017

Validation Of The Electronic Kids Dietary Index (E-Kindex) Screening Tool For Early Identification Of Risk For Overweight/Obesity (Ow/Ob) In A Pediatric Population: Associations With Quality Of Life Perceptions, Patricia A. Hall

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Despite a worsening obesity epidemic and despite the American Medical Association (AMA) declaring Obesity a disease (2013), few assessment tools exist that assist practitioners who are charged with identifying risk for development of OW/OB in children. The Center for Health Statistics (2017) reported a 40% rate in obesity in the adult population and 18.5% in children in the U.S. Successful weight loss maintenance after 1 to 2 years of non-invasive treatment is less than 1%, indicating obesity is nearly incurable, making prevention imperative. Assessing risk for OW/OB in children has proven difficult given the lack of validated tools. The purposes …

Implementation Of The National Asthma Guidelines In A Residential Pediatric Clinic, Patricia A. Foster-Staples

Dissertations

Abstract

Purpose: Foster care children admitted to residential facilities are a unique and vulnerable group, many presenting with undiagnosed or poorly managed asthma. The alarming rate of residents admitted to a particular residential primary care clinic with a diagnosis of asthma led to the project question: “Based on record reviews, does staff education about the importance of utilizing the national guidelines for asthma education influence the implementation of such guidelines in a residential pediatric clinic?” The purpose of this quality improvement project was to implement a systematic process to influence practice change. The project was conducted over a period …

Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Process For The Management Of Concussions In Adolescent Patients For A Primary Care Office, Ashley D. Karczewski May 2017

Implementation Of An Evidence-Based Process For The Management Of Concussions In Adolescent Patients For A Primary Care Office, Ashley D. Karczewski

Doctoral Projects

The number of recreation and sports-related concussions (SRC) are estimated at 3.8 million every year in the United States. Recently, widespread media attention has been paid to concussion, and with this there has been a rise in adolescents with SRC seeking health care. Primary care providers are often the first to evaluate and provide treatment for adolescents with concussion. Despite the abundance of literature on concussions, there has been little empirical data to support management practices for this patient population. The purpose of the project was to provide an evidence-based process along with a clinical decision support tool to the …

Improving Nursing Attitudes Toward Suicide Prevention In The Emergency Department: The Implementation Of An Adolescent Suicide Risk Screening Tool, Julie A. Simpson Apr 2017

Improving Nursing Attitudes Toward Suicide Prevention In The Emergency Department: The Implementation Of An Adolescent Suicide Risk Screening Tool, Julie A. Simpson

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

The Center for Disease Control ranked suicide as the second leading cause of death for American adolescents (2015). This crisis of adolescent suicide warrants evaluation and improvement of current suicide prevention practices. The Emergency Department (ED) offers 24-hour services and may be the only organized healthcare for utilized by some individuals. Nurses are the front-line provider of care in the ED and this role offers opportunity to identify an adolescent with increased suicide risk. The purpose of this EBP project is to evaluate nursing attitudes toward suicide prevention by implementing the best practice screening tool for adolescent suicide risk assessment. …
