The clinical learning environment is where nursing students gain knowledge, practice skills and become socialized into the nursing profession. Traditionally, in Canada, the clinical learning environment takes place hospital and community settings. The COVID-19 pandemic required quick thinking by nursing faculty to replace on-site clinical hours. Given the quick change-over, there was minimal consideration given to nursing students' perspectives in the planning stages. This study aimed to investigate nursing students' experience in the clinical learning environment before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The perceived quality of students' learning experiences was assessed using the Clinical Learning Environment, Supervision and Nurse Teacher …

Our initial intention was to outline the structure of an entity, the Bear Healing Lodge, within the Faculty of Nursing at MacEwan. This structure was created out of the Truth and Reconciliation’s Calls to Action. However, as we engaged in critical discussions we realized that who we were becoming as persons, as we unpacked out privilege and power, was invaluable and informative to prepare us for authentic allyship and partnership. We realized that outcomes and endings were not the end goals, but being uncomfortable and unfinished were necessary for the creation of an ethical space for members to engage in …

Exploring Belongingness In An Accelerated Nursing Program: A Qualitative Study, Elisabeth Bailey, Mathurada Jullamon

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Accelerated baccalaureate nursing programs have proliferated to meet the demands of the current and projected nursing shortage. While these programs serve an important function, accelerated nursing students face unique challenges related to fast pacing, content-heavy courses, and swift transition into complex clinical learning environments. These challenges, coupled with the realities of a strained nursing educator workforce, are potential threats to learning environments that are supportive of students’ academic tenacity and social belonging. While a clear link between nursing students’ positive sense of belonging and their success in clinical learning environments has been established, there is scant research looking at the …

Pharmacogenetic testing is used to tailor medication recommendations based on an individual's genetic makeup. Increased precision in prescribing medication through the use of genetics leads to a reduction in adverse drug reactions resulting in decreased morbidity and mortality. Due to the noted benefits to patient health outcomes and reduction in healthcare costs, a growing number of Canadian health centers and community pharmacies are beginning to offer pharmacogenetic testing. Previous studies indicate that Canadian nurses have minimal education in genomics; however, there has been an increase in attention to nursing roles in the implementation of genomic health practices in recent years. …

Nursing Education: What Fits Best In A Changing World Of Education Gogies?, Christy Raymond, Sherry Dahlke Phd

Quality Advancement in Nursing Education - Avancées en formation infirmière

Nursing education has roots in religious organizations, and apprenticeship approaches to ‘training’ nurses. Over time nursing education has moved to universities; yet retaining the critical practice nature of nursing. As a practice profession, nursing educators have to face the realities of ensuring that knowledge, skills, and values are taught in order for graduates to meet the entry to practice competencies. As graduates, nurses must also have the capacity to assess their knowledge gaps and be self-directed in filling those gaps so that they are providing evidence-based practice to those in their care. Educators must facilitate learning within best education practice, …

Were there lessons learned from the past that could provide a compass to navigate current day challenges and orient future strategies in the continued pursuit of excellence in nursing education? While the history of nursing education in Canada has been previously documented, there has been limited research into the evolution of different educational approaches. We decided to conduct in-depth historical analysis of the conditions that fostered educational scholarship and practice at our SON from 1946 to 2016. …

Approachability Of The Nursing Clinical Instructor: Psychometric Assessment Of A Scale Development, Angela Collier Jun 2020

Approachability Of The Nursing Clinical Instructor: Psychometric Assessment Of A Scale Development, Angela Collier

International Journal of Health Sciences Education

Approachability of nursing clinical instructors is largely unknown and misunderstood, yet critical for millennial students which currently comprise 82% of nursing students (National League for Nursing, 2014). Nursing education consists of both a didactic and a clinical component. Clinical education is dynamic and allows the student an experiential learning opportunity. Therefore, clinical nursing educators are vitally important. Approachability has been identified in many studies as a leading characteristic of an effective instructor. Although the importance of approachability of the instructor is established, currently no scale exists to measure this concept. The purpose of this study was to examine the validity …

The purpose of this qualitative research was to utilize an Institutional Ethnographic (IE) lens to trace how various institutional (regulatory, educational, union, governmental, or health authority) texts and resources organize baccalaureate (RN) and diploma (vocational or practical) nurses’ experiences of learning to practice on acute care teams. Functional care models have been introduced in acute care, creating RN-LPN-health care aide (HCA) teams in conjunction with expanded practice scopes for LPNs. Questions arise as to how nurses (RNs and LPNs) learn to work together on these intra-professional teams. Beginning from the standpoint of front-line workers provides an entry-point into understanding how …
