Introduction: The average day-to-day nursing profession is a stressful one. The job often requires dealing with patients enduring some of the worst times of their lives, as well as contending with patients' emotional family members. This stressful environment is heightened even more for nurses employed in critical access hospitals (CAHs) due to the limited resources usually associated with these smaller facilities. Methods: Research and Evidence-Based Practice Council members at one CAH explored how to help nurses deal with the elevated work stress level. Purpose: To examine the impact of in situ simulation (ISS) with scripting on nursing staff’s knowledge and confidence to initiate rapid response teams (RRTs) immediately after identifying patient condition deterioration. Background/Significance: Failure to rescue (FTR) related to delays in activation of RRT is on the rise, leading to poor patient outcomes. Lack of confidence, knowledge, and empowerment are associated with delayed activation of RRTs. As such, the nursing staff’s confidence is integral in activating RRTs and FTR prevention. Background: Bar Code Medication Administration (BCMA) has been shown to reduce medication errors and improve patient outcomes. The utilization of this technology-driven approach enhances patient care and has emerged as a potent strategy to decrease medication errors. Purpose: This project aimed to examine the impact of descriptive analytics in improving BCMA compliance to reduce medication errors in acute outpatient settings. Methods: In March 2021, baseline data revealed that overall BCMA compliance was 87%, with only 1 out of 20 outpatient units meeting the 95% benchmark. Introduction: To prevent cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills decay, the International Consensus on Resuscitation suggested retraining every three to six months. Current retraining practices nationwide exceed one to two years, suggesting that clinical staff's CPR skills are rarely at optimum proficiency. Background: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) remain among the most common healthcare-associated infections, leading to increased morbidity and mortality in hospitalized adult patients. Methods: An interdisciplinary team initiated a quality improvement project to help reduce CAUTIs in a South Florida hospital. The project included using a CAUTI bundle consisting of indwelling catheter protocols, electronic bladder management order sets, nursing staff education, and implementation of external urinary catheters during the years 2020 through 2022. Results: The CAUTI bundle demonstrated positive outcomes in decreasing CAUTI rates. During our fiscal year 2022, there were 63% fewer CAUTIs (n = 23) compared to 2020 …

Introduction: The CDC (2020) revealed that the age-adjusted prevalence of diabetes mellitus in the United States among the Black, non-Hispanic population is 16.8%. A study conducted by Bivins et al. (2021) revealed a 39% prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) among Haitian Americans (HAs) living in several states. In the literature, HAs are often grouped with Black Americans, yet Haitian American women (HAW) have unique struggles with treatment and management of T2DM. Introduction: Intravenous (IV) vancomycin requires therapeutic drug monitoring and line placement and may prolong hospital stay. Linezolid requires less monitoring, is orally bioavailable, and may expedite transitions of care. This study assessed the impact of a pharmacist-led antibiotic timeout for the transition from IV vancomycin to oral linezolid. Methods: This single-center, quasi-experimental study included admitted adult patients receiving IV vancomycin for over 48 hours. Patients receiving vasopressors, of immunocompromised status, or with specific antibiotic indications were excluded. The primary outcome was the pharmacist intervention acceptance rate. Introduction: Midodrine, an α-adrenergic agonist approved for orthostatic hypotension, is used off-label for hypotension in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). However, its prevalence, clinical outcomes, and risks in HFrEF remain unclear. Theoretically, adding midodrine to HFrEF patients’ medication regimens may facilitate up-titration of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) by attenuating its corresponding hypotensive effects. Despite the challenges encountered with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic, Baptist Hospital of Miami achieved the prestigious American Nursing Credentialing Center Magnet 6th designation. We describe the journey including writing the documents, preparing for the virtual visit, and efforts from key stakeholders to support the virtual site visit with the use of technology, to hold videoconferencing and tours “on wheels.” Nurses showcased their professional practice and excellence in patient care through exemplars and narratives presented during the virtual visit. Last, we provide recommendations for success to organizations contemplating a virtual site visit.

Introduction: Nurses are the most trusted professional group in the United States. As such, examination and exploration of concepts or phenomena, either positively or negatively affecting nurses’ ethical decision-making and moral actions, are needed. While nursing literature is abundant on moral distress and its negative impact, literature on moral comfort (a positive phenomenon) is sparsely available. The purpose of this concept analysis is to explore MC within nursing literature and other disciplines to identify moral comfort’s defining attributes, antecedents, consequences, and empirical referents.

Introduction: Stillbirth fetal loss (SFL) is a significant cause of infant death in the US, with 23,000 reported in 2017. Negative psychological and emotional repercussions of SFL, for parents and nurses, may be mitigated by nurses’ preparedness to provide bereavement support (BS). Several studies exploring BS for miscarriage-related fetal loss were found. However, studies exploring SFL BS and nurses’ preparedness for providing SFL BS are sparse. Background: The correct timing of insulin administration in diabetic patients admitted to the hospital is important for the prevention of transient and serious glycemic deviations that could lead to negative patient outcomes. In November 2021, a South Florida Hospital identified an area of opportunity for quality improvement related to the process of subcutaneous insulin administration. Background: Low-molecular-weight heparin (LMWH) is a commonly used anticoagulant for treatment of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Routine monitoring of therapeutic effects through anti-Xa levels is not recommended but may be beneficial in patients with altered pharmacokinetics.1,2 Inappropriate monitoring leads to excessive testing and premature dose adjustments, compromising safety and efficacy. Introduction: Workplace incivility and bullying are concerning issues in healthcare with detrimental consequences for healthcare workers (HCW) and healthcare organizations. Organizational leaders’ recognition of incivility/bullying within healthcare organizations, and their sources, is imperative to prevent and/or address issues by creating “zero tolerance” work environments. The purpose of this cross-sectional, descriptive study was to explore HCWs’ experiences with incivility and bullying at a South Florida community hospital.

Background: Sleep-related sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) is an alarming, potentially preventable event with over 3,500 annual occurrences in the United States (US). In response to sleep-related SUIDs, the American Academy of Pediatrics and National Institutes of Health advocate for safe sleep practices to promote establishment of safe sleep environments for infants through the Safe to Sleep initiative. However, research evidence shows that lack of knowledge in hospital staff and community members (parents/caregivers) and cultural barriers/biases are factors associated with the inability or resistance to adopting safe sleep practices for infants.

The goal of this process improvement initiative is to reduce hospital-acquired pressure injuries related to Covid-19 with Critical Care patients. Critically ill and ventilated patients require prone position therapy and prolonged ventilator times place the patient at risk for hospital acquired conditions and pressure injuries. The Critical Care team created a Critical Care Admission Pressure Injury Prevention Cart that contains preventative dressings for all pressure areas at risk.

Introduction: Older adults aged 65 and over are vulnerable to functional decline during hospitalization and negative outcomes associated with immobility such as pressure injuries and falls. Studies reveal that nurses overlook patient mobilization due to competing priorities and a lack of comfort with patient mobilization. Hospital-associated functional decline can be mitigated through mobilization protocols. A 36-bed medical surgical unit in a South Florida hospital did not have a protocol for patient mobility.

Implementation of evidence-based practices is an expectation in healthcare and nursing, requiring knowledge and understanding of evidence-based practice (EBP) and research. Recent evidence shows that nurses' lack of knowledge contributes to nurses' lack of participation in EBP and research and their ability to differentiate between the two posing challenges with writing clinical questions and research questions. The purpose of this article is to provide foundational education on the differences, similarities, and relationship between EBP and research, and provide guidance for writing clinical practice and research questions.
