Succeeding In The First Year Of Practice: Heed The Wisdom Of Novice Nurses, Genevieve Chandler

Genevieve E. Chandler

The transition from student to nurse has been described as traumatic, confusing, and shocking. The difficulties encountered by the graduates have led to the premature termination of their first position, and sometimes they leave nursing altogether. To coach new nurses in preparation for their first year of practice using an appreciative inquiry framework, this study focused on the new graduates' perspective of the processes that enabled them to successfully integrate into their new role. From the analysis of 36 interviews, three themes were identified: "They were there for me," "There are no stupid questions," and "Nurturing the seeds." New nurses …

Testing A Work Empowerment-Work Relationship Model To Explain Expertise In Experienced Acute Care Nurses, Genevieve Chandler, J. Roche, D. Morsi

Genevieve E. Chandler

OBJECTIVE: This study tested the ability of work relationships and work empowerment to predict nursing expertise in experienced acute care nurses. BACKGROUND: With high patient acuity, constant system changes, and multiple changing members of the healthcare team, expert nurses are increasingly important to ensure positive patient outcomes in acute care settings. METHOD: This study was an exploratory, predictive correlational design with a stratified random sample of 115 staff nurses from a large tertiary care center. Data were collected on work empowerment, work relationships, and nursing expertise. RESULTS: A modified study model was supported in this sample of acute care nurses …

Nurse Decision Making In The Prearrest Period, Genevieve Chandler, P. Gazarian, E. Henneman

Genevieve E. Chandler

There is a significant body of research demonstrating that many hospitalized patients exhibit signs of clinical deterioration prior to experiencing a cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA).This qualitative study used the critical decision method to describe the cues and factors employed by nurses to identify and interrupt a potentially preventable CPA. The cues that nurses used in identifying a patient at risk for CPA were altered level of consciousness and other selected triggers from the Early Warning Scoring System (EWSS) combined with knowledge of the patient and the contextual features of the decision situation. Nurse characteristics that assisted in interrupting an adverse event …

From Traditional Inpatient To Trauma-Informed Treatment: Transferring Control From Staff To Patient, Genevieve Chandler

Genevieve E. Chandler

Mental health professionals worldwide realize the imperative for reducing inpatient restraints and seclusion. The high incidence of posttraumatic stress disorder for inpatients and the resulting symptoms support the creation of a trauma-informed approach. The objective of the current article is to describe the experience of staff in a 20-bed unit transitioning from traditional inpatient care to a trauma-informed approach. The study comprised a qualitative design using content analysis (n = 10). The patterns clustered into the following categories: changing perspective, developing collaborative relationships, implementing safety measures, and prescribing educational resources. Staff underwent a deep cultural change that subsequently won state …

An Evaluation Of College And Low Income Youth Writing Together: Self Discovery And Cultural Connection, Genevieve Chandler

Genevieve E. Chandler

Although the health and healing effects of writing have been documented in the literature, most of the studies have focused primarily on individuals writing alone. This formative evaluation is a component of an intervention reported elsewhere. The evaluation describes the experience of low-income youth and college students ( n = 7) writing in a group during a 10-week workshop. The results revealed the development of protective processes of self-esteem, self-efficacy, coping strategies, social support, and cultural connections. In the weekly 2-hr writing sessions, using the Amherst Writers and Artists method, participants were encouraged to write their stories in their own …

Making Meaning: The Creative Component In Qualitative Research, A. Hunter, P. Lusardi, D. Zucker, C. Jacelon, Genevieve Chandler

Genevieve E. Chandler

Findings in qualitative research are often wondrous and exciting, expounding new knowledge and perceptions previously unknown. Qualitative research requires the researcher to ponder and reflect on the data collected so as to find the meaning within. Helping researchers learn how to perform this step is not well discussed in the qualitative literature, yet this is one of the more crucial components of this type of research. In this article, the incubation, the meaning-making phase of qualitative research, is discussed in relation to the experiences of five researchers who have used traditional processes, models, metaphors, plays, pastiche, poetry, and quilt making …

Improving Faculty Publication Output: The Role Of A Writing Coach, Genevieve Chandler, Claire Baldwin Dec 2001

Improving Faculty Publication Output: The Role Of A Writing Coach, Genevieve Chandler, Claire Baldwin

Genevieve E. Chandler

Publishing academic papers is recognized by faculty as vital not only to their careers, but also to the standing of their school within the university and the discipline. Although writing is perceived as a critical, high-priority task, it often has low follow-through behavior. To facilitate the publication output of our faculty, a part-time writing coach was hired. Blanchard's situational leadership II® model (1985), which tailors leadership style to the needs of the group, indicated a framework of coaching and support would best meet faculty writing needs. The literature further suggested that an ongoing coaching relationship in the form of a …

Teaching Over Interactive Video: Creating Connections, Genevieve Chandler, P. Hanrahan Jan 2000

Teaching Over Interactive Video: Creating Connections, Genevieve Chandler, P. Hanrahan

Genevieve E. Chandler

This article addresses the two essential elements of distance learning: the technology and the pedagogy. Both areas are discussed through the four components--information, support, resources, and relationships--of a work effectiveness model. Drawing from recent literature and their experience, the authors offer strategies for making interactive video technology "invisible" while engaging students at a distance. Students experience connections when faculty know how to manage the equipment, plan ahead, and consciously construct strategies for creating relationships across the miles.

Student Perceptions Of Empowerment In Their Graduate Program, Genevieve Chandler, Sj Roberts Dec 1997

Student Perceptions Of Empowerment In Their Graduate Program, Genevieve Chandler, Sj Roberts

Genevieve E. Chandler

Empowerment is a critical aspect of the education of the Advanced Practice Nurse (APN). This paper reports a study which asked for feedback from APN students about their experience of feelings of empowerment and powerlessness in their graduate program. Learning which was driven by the student's interest, which respected and valued their experience and which guided them in defining and pursuing individual goals was empowering. Powerlessness was experienced when faculty controlled the process, were demeaning about students' abilities and when learning was not connected to their goals. Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) are in great demand for the emerging health care …

Empowerment Of Graduate Nursing Students: A Dialogue Toward Change, Genevieve Chandler, S. Roberts Dec 1995

Empowerment Of Graduate Nursing Students: A Dialogue Toward Change, Genevieve Chandler, S. Roberts

Genevieve E. Chandler

This article represents the first phase in exploration of empowerment of graduate advanced practice nursing students. This phase includes a review of the relevant literature on empowerment and discusses the applicability of this literature to current educational practice. The authors suggest that creating an empowering environment for learning necessitates dramatic change in teaching methodology and in faculty-student perspective about their roles. An ongoing dialogue among faculty and between students and faculty is proposed to begin to conceptualize this change. This article also presents a synopsis of a dialogue between the two authors intended to stimulate further discussion.

The Relationship Of Nursing Work Environment To Empowerment, Genevieve Chandler

Genevieve E. Chandler

This is an exploratory study of nurses' (~= 268) perceptions of work conditions. The theoretical framework was developed from Rogers' nursing model and Kanter's organizational theory. The principle of integrality from Rogers' nursing model was utilized. Integrality predicts changes in life process through the interaction of the individual and environment. Kanter's theory is more specific to the work areas with similar assumptions to Rogers specifically: The interaction between the individual and the work environment produces work behaviors. The sample was from two hospitals of similar size, purpose, and location in northeast Utah. The nurses were informed of the study through …
