Sentinel events in health care are rare events, often corresponding with permanent injury or death. Fires in the operating room (OR) are one type of sentinel event. Although rare due to possible life-threatening injuries to patients and staff, appropriate surgical fire education is critical in nurse anesthesia education, as anesthesia providers play a significant role in surgical fires (Wunder et al., 2020). A morbidity and mortality report made by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on the impact of telehealth services during the COVID-19 pandemic throughout 2020 noted several instances in which telemedicine tools had contributed to improved patient outcomes, including: increasing the availability of care to patients otherwise left with little access to health care, decreasing unnecessary patient visits, and reduced disease exposure to patients and staff directly at risk (CDC, 2020).

Healthcare organizations must have high-quality nursing staff to deliver optimal patient care. Educators and managers evaluate nurses by their performance through nursing competencies, or “knowledge, skills, [and] abilities” (KSA) (American Nurses Association, 2015, p. 86). Traditional competency evaluations and manual tracking posed a problem within one pediatric hospital. Leaders did not have a transparent way to see the knowledge and skills of their nursing staff. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to use in situ simulation-based mock codes to evaluate the effectiveness of participants’ actions and perceived confidence, and to potentially reinforce and improve knowledge retention, skill acquisition, and confidence levels of nursing staff with regards to pediatric emergencies. Simulated drills were evaluated with a tool focused on high-performance teams and team dynamics as outlined by American Heart Association Pediatric Advanced Life Support 2016. Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are the main anesthesia providers in over 70% of rural hospitals providing anesthesia. Each year, over 2,000 student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) graduate and continue as licensed CRNAs. This Doctor of Nurse Practice (DNP) project emphasizes the importance of developing culturally competent providers in anesthesia by promoting early outreach in cultural competence education of SRNAs. Communication handover is a source of potential error and risk to patient safety. Electronic-based tools may reduce errors and mitigate risks to patient safety. On average, teachers will teach at least one student with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in any given school year without receiving any instructions at all on ADHD. ADHD affects 3% to 7% of school-age students and one in every twenty children (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2010). It is classified as one of the most common mental health disorders affecting school-age students. The American Psychiatric Association (APA, 2013) defines ADHD as a hereditary, non-curable, common childhood disorder.
