The Lived Experiences Of Student Nurses During Simulation Of Perinatal Loss, Paloma Alejandra Peña Apr 2024

The Lived Experiences Of Student Nurses During Simulation Of Perinatal Loss, Paloma Alejandra Peña

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand the experiences and perceptions of undergraduate nursing students in providing care following a perinatal loss simulation. The theories that guided this study included Malcolm Knowles’ Theory of Andragogy and the National League for Nursing Jeffries Simulation. The selected theories provide structure for adult learners’ need to experience situational learning activities that are relevant to their job while building upon the foundation of students’ knowledge. Incorporation of Knowles’ and Jeffries’ theories guides the qualitative study of the simulation of a perinatal loss and the experiences of nursing students in providing care during …

The Lived Experiences Of Faculty Conducting Post-Simulation Debriefing In Nurse Practitioner Programs, Jodi Borden Duncan Jun 2023

The Lived Experiences Of Faculty Conducting Post-Simulation Debriefing In Nurse Practitioner Programs, Jodi Borden Duncan

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Simulation-based education is a teaching–learning pedagogy widely used in nursing programs today. While much research has been done on student perceptions of simulation and the fact most learning occurs in the post-simulation debriefing session, little research has been done on how learning takes place in debriefing. Nurse practitioner faculty also use simulation as a teaching methodology, but the implementation of debriefing methods and faculty experiences with debriefing sessions are not known. As simulation may not be counted as direct clinical hours in nurse practitioner programs, more research must be done before the substitution of hours can be considered. The substitution …

A Team-Based Approach To Increase Initiation Of Self-Management Goals In Adult Patients Diagnosed With Hypertension With The Use Of A Self-Management Goal Toolkit, Kristel Danette Ramsay May 2023

A Team-Based Approach To Increase Initiation Of Self-Management Goals In Adult Patients Diagnosed With Hypertension With The Use Of A Self-Management Goal Toolkit, Kristel Danette Ramsay

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Due to the high risk of cardiovascular disease and other negative complications, it is imperative that patients in the primary care clinic diagnosed with hypertension control blood pressure levels. The purpose of this scholarly project was to increase the initiation of self-management goals (SMGs) among adult males and females age 30 to 60 diagnosed with hypertension. These patients were active duty military, reservists, and dependent beneficiaries who receive care at the Navy Medicine Readiness Training Unit–Memphis. The practice change took the onus of introduction and education about SMGs off the provider and added key responsibilities to support staff, who provided …

The Importance Of Education In The Management Of Diabetes, Taylor Nicole Henry Jul 2022

The Importance Of Education In The Management Of Diabetes, Taylor Nicole Henry

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Type 2 diabetes continues to affect millions of people every day across the United States. Uncontrolled blood sugars pose a risk to individuals’ overall health by causing microvascular and macrovascular changes and ultimately lead to an earlier mortality. One’s blood sugar levels can be checked at any time, but an individual’s hemoglobin (hgb) A1c is a three-month average that allows the diabetic to have an overview on how they are managing their diabetes. Appropriate nutrition and having someone hold the diabetic accountable have proven to limit these risks by lowering the patient’s hgb A1c. Providers and staff need to do …

The Effectiveness Of A Chart Audit And Education Intervention To Improve Rts Referral Rates And Confidence In Emergency Nurses Delivering Care To Patients Experiencing Perinatal Loss, Rachel Kathleen Tillas Jul 2022

The Effectiveness Of A Chart Audit And Education Intervention To Improve Rts Referral Rates And Confidence In Emergency Nurses Delivering Care To Patients Experiencing Perinatal Loss, Rachel Kathleen Tillas

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Perinatal loss is a significant event in a woman’s life that can have both physical and psychological impacts. Women with perinatal loss often seek care in emergency settings. Research shows that nurses working in emergency settings lack confidence in caring for this patient population, and women who seek care for perinatal loss in the emergency department are dissatisfied with their care. Resolve through sharing (RTS) is an evidence-based approach to bereavement care that offers resources and training to organizations and healthcare professionals. RTS can help bridge the education gap among emergency nurses caring for patients experiencing perinatal loss, be used …

The Effect Of Trauma-Informed Care Education On Improving Knowledge And Confidence Of Clinicians Caring For Women In A Labor And Delivery Setting, Claire Annaliese Wycoff Jul 2022

The Effect Of Trauma-Informed Care Education On Improving Knowledge And Confidence Of Clinicians Caring For Women In A Labor And Delivery Setting, Claire Annaliese Wycoff

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The birthing process can be profoundly emotionally, mentally, and physically strenuous for women. Many women feel a loss of sense of control during their labor and birth experience. While trauma during the birthing process can happen to anyone, women with a history of sexual trauma are more likely to experience retraumatization during birth. Health care workers have the ability to exacerbate the patient’s trauma or promote healing through the care they provide. The lack of provider and nurse education in trauma-informed care is related to women’s experiences of secondary trauma during labor and childbirth and can cause prolonged complications for …

Improving Clinician Care Practices Of Patients With Sickle Cell Anemia: An Integrative Review, Tracey Ann Royer Jul 2021

Improving Clinician Care Practices Of Patients With Sickle Cell Anemia: An Integrative Review, Tracey Ann Royer

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited hematological disorder that can have a debilitating impact on those affected. The disease is caused by a mutation in the gene encoding for hemoglobin that alters the formation of the red blood cell to a sickle shape, the source of the term hemoglobin S or sickle hemoglobin. The most common manifestation of this disease state is acute pain due to the effects of vaso-occlusive crisis. The burden of disease can be intense, requiring frequent and prolonged hospitalizations with disruptions in one’s quality of life. Despite the gravity of this disease state, there exist …

Integrative Review On The Initiation Of A Systematic Oral Care Education Program, Toni Rochelle Thomas Jan 2021

Integrative Review On The Initiation Of A Systematic Oral Care Education Program, Toni Rochelle Thomas

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Hospital-acquired infections, such as non-ventilated hospital-acquired pneumonia (NVHAP), are significant patient safety concerns. The lack of oral care in the non-ventilated acute care patient population is a significant contributor to NVHAP. The nursing staff is on the front line in providing oral care to hospitalized patients but often lacks knowledge and understanding regarding the relationship between oral care and NVHAP. Searching MEDLINE, PubMed, CINAHL, and EBSCO databases for current, peer-reviewed, scholarly articles for English language articles between 2010-2020 led to supporting findings. These findings revealed missed oral care as the most common modifiable risk factor contributing to increased hospital-acquired pneumonia …

Sepsis Education Utilizing ‘Sepsis Alert’ Checklist To Support The Adherence Of Early Management Bundle In The Emergency Department, Jean Jun Sep 2019

Sepsis Education Utilizing ‘Sepsis Alert’ Checklist To Support The Adherence Of Early Management Bundle In The Emergency Department, Jean Jun

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Early recognition and timely management of sepsis is a priority within hospitals due to its direct impact on patients’ outcomes. It is critical for healthcare providers to be educated and aware of the signs and symptoms of sepsis. The emergency department (ED) is the forefront of the hospital where majority of patients with sepsis are assessed and either discharged or admitted into the hospital. Therefore, it is critical for ED nurses to be educated in the early signs of sepsis and follow evidence-based practice guidelines when managing these patients. The project leader implemented a sepsis education intervention aimed at clinical …
