Human papillomavirus virus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted disease that can negatively affect both males and females by leading to cervical, vaginal, vulvar, anal, penile, and oropharyngeal cancer. Vaccinating against HPV using the Gardasil vaccine is an effective method to prevent HPV, however, vaccination rates are still unacceptably low in adolescents ages 11 to 14. Pediatric providers should encourage and strongly recommend HPV vaccines to all adolescents. Addressing and easing parental hesitancy is a key component to improving vaccine acceptance. The setting for the project was a rural pediatric office in southern Illinois where HPV vaccination rates are lower than …

Purpose/Background Recognizing mental illness is crucial in adolescence. It is the second leading cause of suicide and death in children 10-19 years of age. Early identification and recognition of signs and symptoms could prevent progressive mental health illness in early childhood and adulthood. We are seeking to answer the PICO question: In adolescents between 10 and 19 years of age who are enrolled in school (P), how does receiving education on depression awareness (I) compared to not receiving education on depression awareness (C) affect depression scores (O)?
Methods This review was conducted on articles about adolescent children. These articles were …

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a mainstay of treatment for problems such as anxiety and depression. However, access to this form of psychotherapy treatment is limited in rural areas, especially in pediatrics. The purpose of this project was to increase access to CBT through the use of smart phone CBT applications for patients at one rural midwest pediatric clinic. An extensive literature review revealed that mobile cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) applications can be an effective option for adjunct therapy when provider access is limited. Two CBT mobile applications were selected for the project and training was provided to clinic providers. …

Despite evidence that long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) is safe, appropriate, and highly efficacious for people under age 25, this younger population is under-represented among LARC users in the US. At the Orion Clinic in Seattle, Kaiser Permanente offers primary care to street-involved young people between the ages of 12 and 24. Since opening in 2016, young patients at the Orion Clinichave initiated LARC at low rates, which reflects national trends. The aims of this project are to understand the reasons for this population’s underuse of highly effective contraceptive methods; to increase participants’ knowledge and positive attitudes toward LARC; and to …

OBJECTIVES: To decrease the depressive symptoms and increase the self-confidence perceptions of adolescents in a high school setting utilizing a cognitive-behavioral skills enhancing, seven-session intervention called COPE (Creating Opportunities for Personal Empowerment).
STUDY DESIGN: The project was an evidence-based nurse practitioner project utilizing pre- and …
