Knowledge & Attitudes Towards Pediatric Pain With Needle-Based Procedures In The Emergency Department Setting, Charlstyn Paige Brown Jan 2023

Knowledge & Attitudes Towards Pediatric Pain With Needle-Based Procedures In The Emergency Department Setting, Charlstyn Paige Brown

DNP Projects

PURPOSE: By the time a child enters kindergarten, they may have faced as many as thirty-three vaccine-related injections. Throughout these experiences, parents and patients associated pain and fear regarding the administration of multiple vaccines concurrently to a child has played a role in vaccine hesitancy and refusal. Parents and patients experience associated fear and pain regarding the administration of multiple concurrent scheduled vaccines, thus leading to vaccination hesitancy and refusal. In addition to scheduled immunizations, there is also the possibility of unexpected needle-based procedures taking place when emergencies arise. The purpose of the study is to explore the current …

Care Coordination Of The Geriatric Traumatic Fracture Patient: A Multimodal Approach To Pain Management, Alexandra Keough Jan 2021

Care Coordination Of The Geriatric Traumatic Fracture Patient: A Multimodal Approach To Pain Management, Alexandra Keough

DNP Projects

Introduction: Traumatic fractures are increasing in incidence across the country, particularly in the aging population. Geriatric patients who are admitted to the acute care setting for traumatic fractures are a unique population that require acute pain management, while also managing other comorbidities. While there are several guidelines on pain management for patients who are admitted to the acute care setting, there are no specific guidelines on the best practices to manage acute pain in the geriatric traumatic fracture population. Evidence supports a multimodal pain management strategy using pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic means as the best way to care for this population. …

Evaluation Of A Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool Quality Initiative, Caissy A. Goe Jan 2018

Evaluation Of A Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool Quality Initiative, Caissy A. Goe

DNP Projects

Background: Patients unable to self-report pain are at increased risk for inadequate pain management and less than optimal outcomes. The implementation of behavioral pain scales, such as the Critical-Care Pain Observation Tool (CPOT), have demonstrated an improvement in pain management and patient outcomes.

Local Problem: A lack of the routine use of behavioral pain scales for mechanically ventilated patients unable to self-report pain was identified as a significant barrier to optimal pain and agitation management.

Methods: A retrospective pre and post design was used to evaluate the effectiveness and impact of a CPOT quality initiative on the management of pain, …

A Retrospective Chart Review On The Effects Of Cam On Pain And/Or Anxiety In The Oncology And Bone Marrow Transplant Population, Cherry Nelson Jan 2017

A Retrospective Chart Review On The Effects Of Cam On Pain And/Or Anxiety In The Oncology And Bone Marrow Transplant Population, Cherry Nelson

DNP Projects

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to promote integrative medicine by evaluating the efficacy of Complementary Alternative Medicines (CAM) on pain and/or anxiety reduction in the oncology and bone marrow transplant population. The four modalities of CAM were massage, Jin Shin Jyutsu (JSJ), aromatherapy and narrative medicine.

METHODS: The design was a single center retrospective chart review, focusing on medications for pain and anxiety, self-reported pain levels, self-reported anxiety levels, chronicity of pain and acuity of pain prior to and after the CAM modality/s implementation.

RESULTS: Due to the lack of electronic documentation of massage, aromatherapy and narrative medicine, …

Emergency Nurses' Knowledge Of Pediatric Complaints, Kari J. Blackburn Jan 2014

Emergency Nurses' Knowledge Of Pediatric Complaints, Kari J. Blackburn

DNP Projects

Each year there are more than 25 million pediatric emergency department (ED) visits, with 37-60% of the complaints being non-urgent (Brosseau, Hoffman, Nattinger, Flores, Zhang and Gorelick, 2007). Injury is the number one reason children present to the ED and is strongly associated with a complaint of pain (AHRQ, 2013). While pain is a high volume reason for visiting the ED, there are other presentation causes that may pose a high risk to pediatric patients. Nausea and vomiting is not typically viewed as a high risk complaint, yet there are some high risk etiologies resulting in nausea and vomiting that …

Post-Laminectomy Back Pain: Understanding The Progress From Acute To Chronic Pain State, James Derek Calhoun Jan 2014

Post-Laminectomy Back Pain: Understanding The Progress From Acute To Chronic Pain State, James Derek Calhoun

DNP Projects

In the United States, 74.6% of patients who have lumbar laminectomy surgery have residual low back pain (Hussain & Erdek, 2014) and overall costs of low back pain may reach up to $200 billion per year (Carey & Frebuger 2013). To further address this problem, a study was conducted to determine if treatment in a chronic pain clinic could result in a reduction in the development of a chronic pain state for adult patients who have had lumbar laminectomy surgeries. A convenience sample of 50 patients was selected from the Interventional Pain Associates clinic at the University of Kentucky. Records …

Self Reported Pain Diary For Assessment Of Chronic Pain In The Communicative, Cognitively Intact Nursing Home Resident, Kathy K. Hager Jan 2006

Self Reported Pain Diary For Assessment Of Chronic Pain In The Communicative, Cognitively Intact Nursing Home Resident, Kathy K. Hager

DNP Projects

This paper describes a clinical project using a self-reported pain diary for the assessment of chronic pain in the communicative, cognitively-intact nursing home resident. There are estimates of chronic pain among nursing home residents that range from 4 – 83%. The goal of this clinical project was to evaluate a chronic pain diary in relation to its effectiveness and efficiency in accurately assessing pain among nursing home residents. Assessment has been identified as a major barrier in the control of chronic pain, and the self-report is accepted as the most reliable measure of a person’s pain. The self-reported pain diary’s …
