Background: Nursing students are experiencing workplace bullying during clinical placements. Such experiences contribute to a loss of trust and decrease in communication, ultimately affecting patient care. This has resulted in nursing students contemplating leaving the profession. If projections are accurate, Canada will be short 60,000 nurses by the year 2022. With the current nursing shortage crisis and an aging workforce, it is cause for concern when future nurses report intentions to leave the profession.

Authentic Leadership And Workplace Bullying Among Experienced Registered Nurses: Testing A Double Mediation Model, Edmund J. Walsh

The aims of this study were to assess the relationship between managers’ authentic leadership and workplace bullying among experienced registered nurses and examine whether this relationship is mediated by psychological capital and professional practice environment. This study was a secondary analysis of baseline survey data using a non-experimental, correlational design. A random sample of 478 nurses was obtained from Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Ontario. The hypothesized double mediation model was tested using PROCESS for SPSS. Overall, the model accounted for 23.2% of the variance in bullying. Reports indicate that new graduate nurses (NGNs) are experiencing stressful work environments, affecting job satisfaction and retention in current positions. New nurses are a health human resource that must be retained in order to ensure the replacement of retiring nurses, and to address impending shortages.
