According to recent studies, many medical errors are caused by ineffective hand-off communication, which leads to patient harm and poor outcomes. Researchers have demonstrated that accurate and timely communication improves patient outcomes. The purpose of this quality improvement project was to evaluate the necessity, planning, implementation, outcomes, and transferability of the site quality improvement project, “Improving Nurse-to-Nurse Handoff With the Use of a Tablet.” The context/input/process/product model was used to provide a systematic approach to the evaluation of the site quality improvement project. Despite some improvement, no consensus exists to perfect quality in anesthesia handoff practice and policy. This quality improvement project was designed to assist a local anesthesia and perioperative workforce questioning the quality of its current handoff. Theories and models used to inform the project included the Inter-Professional Team Collaborative, Lewin's change theory, the continuous quality improvement theory, and the knowledge to action model. Evidence supports bedside report as a mechanism to improve communication, patient safety, quality of report, and nurse and patient satisfaction when implemented in a closed unit. The purpose of this project was to examine the impact of implementing a bedside report process to transition patients from the emergency department to a medical-surgical unit. Specifically, the goal was to analyze the impact of a bedside- reporting process on patient progression and on nurse and patient satisfaction.
