AbstractLeaders of health care organizations have limited evidence of the impact of pulmonary embolism response teams (PERTs) on quality outcomes for patients with an intermediate and high-risk pulmonary embolism (PE). The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether there was any significant difference in patient HCAHPS linear mean scores for instructions given about medication and overall care between acute care hospitals with and without PERT teams. In 2019, hospital profitability margins were at their lowest levels since the great recession due to a declining volume of patients. Hospital executives who fail to improve profitability are at risk of sustainability. Grounded in the service-profit chain theory, the purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to examine whether nurse-to-patient ratios and patient satisfaction scores significantly predict hospital profitability. Data were collected from 74 hospitals in Southern California from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services government database and publicly available financial statements. Patient perception of care has become a main priority in the delivery of high-quality health care. The creation of the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey provided a nationally standardized method of evaluating patient perception to be incorporated in the reimbursement process defined by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Many U.S. hospitals have historically failed to recognize nursing as essential to quality of care. Given the relationship between the patients' experiences, measured by the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS), and government reimbursement, stakeholders now value the role of nurses in the care experience. The clinical practice problems addressed by the DNP project were the low patient satisfaction scores and the high number of falls on a hospital neurological step-down unit. The purpose of this project was to improve the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems score on one patient satisfaction question and decrease the number of patient falls by implementing hourly rounding, using a script related to patient comfort and toileting needs. There is a lack of quality communication among health care professionals and patients in the hospital setting, which can negatively impact patient satisfaction and increase hospital readmission rates. Interdisciplinary bedside rounding (IBR) is a method of rounding that uses direct communication and discussion of the patient at the bedside, and the use of IRB may improve the quality communication among health care professionals and patients.
