In 2019, it was estimated there were 18 million avoidable emergency department (ED) visits, totaling $32 billion in unnecessary healthcare spending. Super-utilizers (SU), individuals that seek care in the ED 3 or more times per year, account for a disproportionately large segment of healthcare consumption and costs. These patients inefficiently access the healthcare system and often fail to get the follow-up care that could prevent them from repeat ED visits.

Problem: Functional decline is the leading complication of hospitalization in the elderly. Loss of functional independence during hospitalization results from the inability to maintain function during hospitalization compounded by acute illness. Potential negative outcomes from decreased function include increased length of stay (LOS), morbidity, and added discharges to a skilled nursing facilities (SNF).

Recent research indicates that the majority of women underestimate their risk of developing coronary artery disease (CAD). CAD claims the lives of more women than all forms of cancer; however, women have not received the symptom recognition or treatment that has been accorded to men with CAD. Review of literature indicated a lack of research regarding the experiences of women with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).
