Exploration Of The Oral Microbiome In Non-Ventilated Hospitalized Patients, Kimberly Emery

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Non-ventilator hospital acquired pneumonia (NV-HAP) impacts 1 in 100 hospitalized patients and is a significant patient concern due to its negative clinical outcomes. Many factors play a role in NV-HAP development: oral health, oral care, microaspiration risk, and the oral microbiome. Little is known about how the oral microbiome alters during hospitalization. This study explored changes in the oral microbiome of non-ventilated hospitalized patients over time and analyzed the relationship between the oral microbiome, pre-hospital residence, and NV-HAP. A prospective, observational design was used to recruit 46 non-ventilated adults 65 years and older from a large medical center in central …

Nurse Managers' Patient Safety Communication, Christine Deatrick Jan 2022

Nurse Managers' Patient Safety Communication, Christine Deatrick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Medical errors are a continuing issue for healthcare organizations and can lead to patient harm or death. To bring about organizational learning and therefore reduce medical errors, information must successfully flow through an organization. Nurse managers play an essential role as the conduit of information between frontline staff and the organization. The primary purpose of this study is to describe the decision-making process of how nurse managers actively select and transmit information on patient safety concerns. A qualitative constructivist grounded theory approach was used. Nineteen unit-level nurse managers, working full-time in an acute care hospital with a minimum of one-year …

Cognitive Rehearsal, Self-Efficacy, And Workplace Incivility Among Baccalaureate Nursing Students, Alina Diaz-Cruz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Workplace incivility is a widespread problem in the clinical work environment that affects present and future generations of nurses. The purpose of this study was to determine if a cognitive rehearsal intervention (i.e., TeamSTEPPS® DESC script) would increase senior nursing students' self-efficacy, decrease workplace incivility experienced in the clinical work environment, and if nursing students' pre-intervention self-efficacy level would be indirectly associated with post-intervention workplace incivility. A quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest study was used to measure the effect of a cognitive rehearsal intervention on nursing students' self-efficacy levels and workplace incivility experienced in their clinical rotation at an acute care center. …

The Influences Of Generational Membership And Practice Environment On Nurse Manager Job Satisfaction, Angela Keith Jan 2021

The Influences Of Generational Membership And Practice Environment On Nurse Manager Job Satisfaction, Angela Keith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

The United States (US) is facing considerable shortages in all aspects of the nursing profession and this includes management. The nurse manager (NM) is a critical member of the healthcare team. They greatly influence the quality of patient care, staff retention, and the implementation of front-line and often progressive healthcare policy changes. Short tenures, high turnover rates, and poor recruiting outcomes, however, are threatening the current and future supply of experienced NMs. Today, there are three generations of NMs in practice: baby boomers, generation Xers, and generation Y'ers (also called millennials). Each of these cohorts has its own unique perception …

First Impressions Of The Bedside Nurse From The Patient Perspective, Sharon Imes Jan 2021

First Impressions Of The Bedside Nurse From The Patient Perspective, Sharon Imes

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Relationships begin with first impressions. Since nurses are the cornerstone to hospital experiences, the nurse-patient relationship is of vital importance, beginning with the first impression. The nurse-patient relationship has the potential to impact the patient's trust, comfort, fear, and ultimately satisfaction with the entire hospital experience. Evidence is found in other disciplines emphasizing the importance of the first impression, however there is minimal research in nursing about first impressions of the bedside nurse. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the first step in understanding the first impression of the bedside nurse from the patient perspective. Additionally, this research …

Remembering To Resume: Using Simulation-Based Education To Teach Nursing Students To Manage Interruptions, Peggy Hill Jan 2021

Remembering To Resume: Using Simulation-Based Education To Teach Nursing Students To Manage Interruptions, Peggy Hill

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Introduction: Since nurses are expected to be constantly available and responsive, their workflow is interrupted about 85 times each shift. As nursing students socialize to the profession, they need to learn how to adapt to an interruption fraught practice environment. Background: While some interruptions are important to patient care, dealing with conflicting demands can lead to mental fatigue, increased task time, and enhanced propensity for errors. Some experienced nurses learn to create strategies that facilitate remembering to resume an interrupted task, but they are often adopted through trial and error. When simulation-based education (SBE) is used according to industry standards, …

Hospital Readmission After Major Abdominal/Colorectal Surgeries: A Mixed-Methods Study, Ansu Sebastian Jan 2021

Hospital Readmission After Major Abdominal/Colorectal Surgeries: A Mixed-Methods Study, Ansu Sebastian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Hospital readmission after major abdominal and colorectal surgeries is a complex phenomenon that impacts the quality and affordability of healthcare. A comprehensive review of the literature after implementation of the Hospital Readmission Reduction Program in 2012 revealed a paucity in studies that analyzed patients' perceptions regarding the phenomenon of readmission. In addition, there is a need for randomized trials that assess the impact of interventions on the rate of readmission among complex surgical patients. A mixed-methods study was conducted to combine descriptive factors impacting hospital readmission with patients' perceptions to produce meaningful data. The results indicated that although discharge education …

The Effect Of Acuity-Based Nurse Staffing On Nursing Medication Errors, Egidius Maria Eugene Waterval Jan 2020

The Effect Of Acuity-Based Nurse Staffing On Nursing Medication Errors, Egidius Maria Eugene Waterval

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Nurses spend on average one third of their time on direct patient care, and most on indirect care in hospital settings. However, nursing workload is challenging to measure in a systemized, accurate, and timely way. Patient classification systems are designed to capture information about nursing workload based on the illness severity of the patient (acuity) to determine staffing resources and balance nursing workload. These systems are instruments that group nursing care activities in different categories to determine patient acuity. Electronic health records provide opportunities to use available data sets to accurately, and in real-time, document many direct and indirect patient …

Undergraduate Nursing Students' Depth Of Reflection And Perceptions Of Self-Debriefing Following Virtual Simulation: A Multi-Method Descriptive Study, Valorie Mackenna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-

Virtual simulation is a method of simulation-based education in which students participate in a clinical experience within a computer program and away from a clinical environment or classroom. This innovation makes simulation more accessible for learning, but also more challenging when it comes to providing a debriefing activity directly afterward by a facilitator. The purpose of debriefing is to afford learners the opportunity to reflect on the experience with a goal toward improvement. From the best practice standards, two recommendations stipulate that a debriefing session should occur soon after a simulation and should promote reflection. Self-debriefing is uniquely capable of …
