Background/ Rationale: It has been established that Interprofessional Education (IPE) offers a solution to foster teamwork and improve patient care and should be implemented early in professional role development. Thomas Jefferson University has been providing IPE to interprofessional healthcare students for over 5 years. A long term strategic goal was identified to “create innovative learning environments that support interprofessional education including state-of-the-art technologies”. In actualizing this goal, the curriculum was enhanced with technology supported collaborative learning techniques to assist in group processing and reflection. Combining traditional IPE activities with technology supported components incorporated the advantages of both delivery methods, …

There is a growing evidence in the nursing literature about the effectiveness of clinical simulation as a powerful teaching/learning strategy. This wealth of research attributes simulation's effectiveness to its design that creates an environment where "students become active learners, abandoning memorization for accessing knowledge, and thinking and applying learning in context rather than providing answers to fact-based test" (Jeffries, 2007). A simulation suite provides a "safe, supportive environment that allows students to learn a variety of complex skills in a stress-free environment" (Ghiglieri, Ruiz, & Vasudevan, 2007). Creating this environment requires meticulous planning to details. The learner must have a …

Factors Influencing The Implementation Of A Point-Of-Care Screening Tool For Delirium, Beth Ann Swan, Phd, Crnp, Faan, Julie Becker, Phd, Mph, Rickie Brawer, Mph, Phd, Christopher N. Sciamanna, Md, Mph

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

Given the ample evidence delirium in hospitalized older adults is under diagnosed and not recognized by nurses up to 85% of the time, interventions are needed at the point of care to assist nurses in recognizing delirium. In this qualitative study, factors that might influence the implementation of a point-of-care screening tool for delirium were examined.

Multimethod Teaching Strategies To Integrate Selected Qsen Competencies In A Doctor Of Nursing Practice Distance Education Program, Mary Lou Manning, Phd, Crnp, Anthony J. Frisby, Phd

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

The Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) initiative identified 6 competencies for the education of nurses (patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, evidence-based practice, quality improvement, safety, and informatics) and the related knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs) for each competency. The initial QSEN focus was on competency development during prelicensure nursing education, with subsequent attention on adapting the KSAs for graduate programs that prepare advanced practice nurses for clinical roles. Description of successful QSEN competency integration in Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs is limited. Although the ultimate goal is executing DNP programs where quality and safety is thoroughly integrated …

Recruiting, retaining, and educating advanced practice nurses is essential to meet the growing need for advanced practice nurses in rural and urban communities. Through the support of Health Resources and Services Administration funding, the urban school of nursing expanded its MSN program and implemented the graduate curriculum on its rural campus by utilizing emerging online and distance education technologies. The purpose of this manuscript is to provide an overview of expanding an existing MSN program offered in an urban, traditional classroom setting to rural graduate nursing students via an online synchronous format. In addition, the article will describe the rural …

Defining And Assessing Organizational Culture, Jennifer Bellot Phd, Rn, Mhsa Feb 2011

Defining And Assessing Organizational Culture, Jennifer Bellot Phd, Rn, Mhsa

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

PROBLEM.  Using theories from several disciplines, the concept of organizational culture remains controversial. Conflicting definitions, lack of semantic clarity, and debate over the most appropriate methods for assessing organizational culture have led to disagreement over the value and validity of such inquiry.

METHODS.  This paper reviews development of the concept of organizational culture and methods for assessing organizational culture, focusing on the healthcare environment.

FINDINGS.  Most work on organizational culture concerns the traditional corporation. Therefore, some adaptation to the central goals and focus of a human services organization are necessary before application to healthcare settings.

Effective, Efficacious, And Safe Nurse Driven Dysphagia Screening, Robin Fry, Bsn, Rn, Cnrn, Marie Wilson, Bsn, Rn, Ccrn, Cnrn, Carey Heck, Ms, Msn, Rn, Acnp-Cs, Ccrn, Cnrn

Department of Nursing papers and presentations

Introduction:

With 795,000 people suffering strokes and more than 140,000 deaths annually, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States.

Dysphagia screening can reduce stroke complications, such as aspiration, and can decrease delays in nutritional support. Decreasing nutritional support delays can improve patient outcomes.

Human Milk Intake In Preterm Infants: Correlation Of The Preterm Infant Breastfeeding Behavior Scale (Pibbs) And Test Weighing, Ann Phalen Jan 2011

Human Milk Intake In Preterm Infants: Correlation Of The Preterm Infant Breastfeeding Behavior Scale (Pibbs) And Test Weighing, Ann Phalen

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

Conclusions:

Direct observation and the use of the observational instruments are not clinically useful in predicting milk intake in preterm infants.

PHA, PNA, and BFE should not be used arbitrarily as predictor variables

Test weighing is the most reliable method to measure milk intake.

The PIBBS is a reliable instrument when used by trained lactation specialists but not predictive of milk intake in preterm infants for the volume of milk intake in preterm infants.

The Impact Of Gi Inpatient Nursing Rounds On Patient Procedure Cancellations, Barbara Alpini, Rn, Cgrn, Elise Dorr-Dorynek, Rn, Bsn, Crrn, Cgrn Jan 2011

The Impact Of Gi Inpatient Nursing Rounds On Patient Procedure Cancellations, Barbara Alpini, Rn, Cgrn, Elise Dorr-Dorynek, Rn, Bsn, Crrn, Cgrn

Department of Nursing papers and presentations

Abstract:

Research on rounding among hospital providers demonstrated the fundamental value in the practice. If rounding is of value in surgical, medical, and other areas, it is logical to hypothesize that structured rounds would be useful for other nursing units, such those performing special procedures. Structured rounding between GI nurses and colleagues on inpatient units could enhance preparation and efficient care of patients, decrease same day cancellations, and increase RN satisfaction with communication. Analysis using a Z-test demonstrated some support for a reduction in canceled procedures. Nurses also reported satisfaction with this new rounding procedure.

Doctor Of Nursing Practice Students Advocating For Health Care Access, Quality, And Reform: From The Virtual Classroom To Capitol Hill., Mary Lou Manning, Dolores Grosso

College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations

The potential for doctor of nursing practice students to inform and influence the national health care reform movement inspired faculty teaching an online Health and Social Policy course to create an assignment combining comparative effectiveness research with a trip to Capitol Hill to meet with congressional representatives. Preparing for and participating in such an assignment can present challenges for online doctoral students already busy with family and professional responsibilities. However, from both faculty and student perspectives, the lasting value and professional growth are immeasurable. Course details and the theoretical concepts of experiential education are presented, as well as trip logistics …
