A Case Study Of Factors Influencing Remote University Nursing Graduates And Their Decision To Work In A Remote Hospital, Sally Clark

Theses

The health of the rural population in Western Australia (WA) is predicated on equity and access to healthcare facilities with nurses being the main component of front line staff. There continues to be a nurse shortage particularly in remote regions of Australia where the poor health status of Australian Indigenous people, and an increasing ageing population are a perennial problem. The Kimberley, the setting for this study, is a remote region in the north of WA. It has a landmass of 423,517 square kilometres with a significantly low-density population compared to the total WA population. Nearly half of the Kimberley …

Protocol For Care After Lymphoma (Caly) Trial: A Phase Ii Pilot Randomised Controlled Trial Of A Lymphoma Nurse-Led Model Of Survivorship Care, K Taylor, D Joske, M Bulsara, C Bulsara, L Monterosso

Nursing Papers and Journal Articles

Introduction: Lymphoma is the sixth most common cancer diagnosed in Australia and internationally. Owing to the aggressive nature of the disease and intensity of treatment, survivors face long-term effects that impact on quality of life. Current models of follow-up post-treatment fail to address these complex issues. Given that 74% of patients with lymphoma cancer now survive 5 years beyond diagnosis and treatment, it is important to address this gap in care.

Aim: To determine self-reported informational and practical needs, anxiety, depression, stress, coping and empowerment at baseline, 3 and 6 months.

Methods and analysis: A pilot randomised controlled trial will …

Embracing The Power Of Belongingness: A Descriptive Mixed Method Research Study, K Russell, S Alliex, H Gluyas Jan 2016

Embracing The Power Of Belongingness: A Descriptive Mixed Method Research Study, K Russell, S Alliex, H Gluyas

Nursing Papers and Journal Articles

Background: Clinical placements should provide nursing students with a positive environment for learning in which they develop a framework for future practice. The literature articulates that this is not always the case. The objective of this research was to develop, implement and evaluate a new education seminar for nursing staff—The Art of Clinical Supervision (ACS), designed for nurses to provide a toolbox of strategies to better support students whilst on clinical placement. The ACS was presented in Western Australia, in both metropolitan and regional health services, in both the public and private health sector. This sample consisted of 199 registered …

Health Professionals Learning To Always Care For Patients, K Russell Jan 2016

Health Professionals Learning To Always Care For Patients, K Russell

Nursing Papers and Journal Articles

During the summer break, semester two and four students from the Bachelor of Nursing at The University of Notre Dame Australia, Fremantle Campus, worked with the Fremantle Hospital and Health Service Accreditation Team to develop educational material for staff and visitors on the National Safety and Quality Health Service Standards (NSQHS) – especially standard 2.

This collaborative approach to provide a unique clinical placement, that intrinsically benefits the student and health service, reminds us that learning in today’s modern healthcare system should embrace areas of practice outside of the traditional clinical nursing role.

An Investigation Of Nurse Education Service Models In Acute Care Metropolitan Hospitals Across Australia, Carolyn Keane Jan 2016

An Investigation Of Nurse Education Service Models In Acute Care Metropolitan Hospitals Across Australia, Carolyn Keane

Theses

The provision of continuing professional development for nurses is necessary to support the delivery of safe patient care. Nurse education departments need to function as effectively and efficiently as possible, producing measurable outcomes to justify their cost in regard to the organisation’s financial bottom line. In reviewing the literature, three recognised models of nurse education services within hospitals were identified. These are described as centralised, decentralised and combination models. All of these models have advantages and disadvantages that can affect service delivery, quality of service and cost.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the different nurse education service …

Background: There are a variety of methods for priority setting in health research but few studies have addressed how to prioritise the gaps that exist between research evidence and clinical practice. This study aimed to build a suite of robust, evidence based techniques and tools for use in implementation science projects. We applied the priority setting methodology in lung cancer care as an example.

Methods: We reviewed existing techniques and tools for priority setting in health research and the criteria used to prioritise items. An expert interdisciplinary consensus group comprised of health service, cancer and nursing researchers iteratively reviewed and …
