BACKGROUND: Assertive community treatment (ACT) is characterized as a service delivery platform and represents an ideal setting in which mental health and physical health care can be integrated. OBJECTIVE: Little is known about the extent to which ACT integrates physical health care with mental health care or the challenges ACT teams experience. To address this gap, focus groups were conducted with five ACT teams in a Midwestern US state to explore how ACT teams address the physical health care needs of persons with severe mental illness. DESIGN: A qualitative study design was used. RESULTS: Three major themes emerged: ACT teams …

While there is a substantive body of knowledge on depression, little is known about the experience of despair. This phenomenological study explored women’s experience of despair through qualitative interviews with 14 women ages 28 to 55 (M= 45) who self-identified as experiencing despair. Three themes emerged: “crippling and debilitating,” “there’s nothing you can do”, and “it’ll never end.” The findings suggest that women desire to have their experiences recognized and validated while simultaneously receiving acknowledgement of their ability to overcome the past and to shape their own destinies.

In this review, a synthesis of studies employing community-based participatory research (CBPR) to address mental health problems of minorities, strengths and challenges of the CBPR approach with minority populations are highlighted. Despite the fact that minority community members voiced a need for innovative approaches to address culturally unique issues, findings revealed that most researchers continued to use the traditional methods in which they were trained. Moreover, researchers continued to view mental health treatment from a health service perspective.

Healing Scents: An Overview Of Clinical Aromatherapy For Emotional Distress, Andrea Butje, Elizabeth Repede, Mona Shattell
Mona Shattell
Individuals in emotional distress are often treated with psychotherapeutic agents, but other treatment options exist (Hogan & Shattell, 2007). One safe and effective adjunct for the prevention and treatment of emotional distress is aromatherapy (Field et al., 2005; Kuroda et al., 2005; Lemon, 2004), the therapeutic use of inhaled essential oils. Aromatherapy is one of the fastest growing modalities in complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) in the United States (U.S.) (d’Angelo, 2002), but research on aromatherapy is relatively scant and few nursing programs offer courses in aromatherapy. This article describes the physiological effects of scent, reviews the research on aromatherapy, …

Childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) is one of the most important psychiatric problems of our time. This study examined the experience of childhood AD/HD within the contexts that are most significant to this age group – home, school, and friendships. The sample included 16 college-enrolled young adults (ages 18 - 25) with a self-reported history of AD/HD. Participants revealed feelings of difference, misunderstanding, and struggle in all areas of their lives (home, school, and friendships). Nurses can use these findings to improve the care and long-term outcomes of children diagnosed with AD/HD.

The Ecology Of Bipolar Disorder: The Importance Of Sleep, Mona Shattell, Mary Umlauf

Although much of the emphasis on treating Bipolar Disorder patients is pharmacotherapy, sleep loss is an important trigger for mania and plays an important role in the condition. The purpose of this paper is to fully explore the chronobiological, environmental, social and genetic factors that contribute to the sleep disruption that is characteristic of mania and bipolar disorder. This review is important because sleep, chronobiology and genetics are under-emphasized content areas in nursing education. As a result many practicing nurses are unaware of the importance of sleep for mental health or what to teach patients to improve both the quality …
