In today's competitive job market, many working adults are returning to graduate school with rusty information literacy and computer skills. Before You Write: Six Keys to Success was designed to re-introduce returning adult students to the basic skills they will need for success in a graduate program. These six modules are self-paced and utilize real world scenario based assessments. In this session, a librarian and an informatics professor will discuss the inception and implementation of this collaborative information literacy/informatics initiative.

PURPOSE: To report the results of a multidisciplinary, interinstitutional writing support group established to facilitate faculty scholarly productivity. ORGANIZING CONCEPT: The road to scholarship can be filled with many obstacles, among them time constraints, teaching and meeting demands, student needs, office interruptions, and lack of colleagueship. The problems associated with lack of colleagueship, in particular, can be compounded for faculty who work in isolated contexts with few, if any, senior faculty to serve as mentors. The aim of this study was to pilot test a group-writing intervention to decrease negative workplace behaviors. The pilot test demonstrated that cohesive and supportive relationships developed and allowed nurses to talk about important topics. The participants suggested that a writing group would be a forum that could be used by staff development educators to encourage nurses to support each other and develop their voices.

An Evaluation Of College And Low Income Youth Writing Together: Self Discovery And Cultural Connection, Genevieve Chandler

Although the health and healing effects of writing have been documented in the literature, most of the studies have focused primarily on individuals writing alone. This formative evaluation is a component of an intervention reported elsewhere. The evaluation describes the experience of low-income youth and college students ( n = 7) writing in a group during a 10-week workshop. The results revealed the development of protective processes of self-esteem, self-efficacy, coping strategies, social support, and cultural connections. Publishing academic papers is recognized by faculty as vital not only to their careers, but also to the standing of their school within the university and the discipline. Although writing is perceived as a critical, high-priority task, it often has low follow-through behavior. To facilitate the publication output of our faculty, a part-time writing coach was hired. Blanchard's situational leadership II® model (1985), which tailors leadership style to the needs of the group, indicated a framework of coaching and support would best meet faculty writing needs.
