Aim

To define the concept of foundational competence as it pertains to prelicensure and graduate nursing students during their educational program, thereby informing pedagogical and assessment practices.

Background

Competence has many definitions and uses, however a lack of consensus of a clear and useful definition in nursing persists. Without shared language, competence remains open for interpretation across and among groups and impedes the ability to teach and assess it in a competency-based education framework.

Background:

The concept of uncertainty in illness has been well described and applied to many different areas of nursing and other disciplines. The liberal usage of the concept of empowerment has led to the development of a broad and ambiguous term. In health care, empowerment is a core principle of patient-centered care that promotes patient engagement in health management. This is an analysis of the concept of empowerment within the context of cancer survivorship using both Rodgers' evolutionary concept analysis and Caron and Bower's dimensional analysis. The dimensional analysis followed the evolutionary concept analysis as the perspectives of patients and nurse providers emerged in the analysis. Aim: The aim of this concept analysis is to create a clear definition and framework to guide weight self-management research and promotion of healthy weight self-management during the postpartum period. Background: A woman’s ability to manage her weight through the postpartum transition has lifelong implications for her weight status. Methods: This concept analysis was guided by Walker and Avant (2005). A broad search of sources was performed, yielding 56 articles in which postpartum weight self-management was the main focus.
