A simulation was constructed with the aim of improving nursing students’ understanding of the needs of Middle Eastern refugees.

The research questions were: what are student nurses’ perceptions on the unique culture of the Middle Eastern refugee population after participating in a simulation of this populations’ experiences, and how will these influence the students’ interactions with this population in their nursing career?

Upon completion of nursing school, new graduate nurses sit for licensure examination to demonstrate the minimal knowledge necessary to practice safely as an entry level nurse. Despite satisfactory completion of this examination, many new graduate nurses lack the competency and confidence to safely practice (Jung, Lee, Kang, & Kim, 2016 & Liaw, Palham, Chan, Wong & Lim, 2014). Introduction: Falls are the most common accident reported in acute care hospitals and patients who are 65 and older are the most vulnerable. Falls can lead to physical and emotional injury, reduced mobility and functioning, increased length of hospital stay, increased healthcare costs, and admission to long-term care facilities. In 2008, the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has eliminated reimbursement to hospitals for treatment of injuries resulting from a fall during hospitalization. There are significant limitations among the few prior studies that have examined the development and implementation of interprofessional education (IPE) experiences to accommodate a high volume of students from several disciplines and from different institutions. The present study addressed these gaps by seeking to determine the extent to which a single, large, inter-institutional, and IPE simulation event improves student perceptions of the importance and relevance of IPE and simulation as a learning modality, whether there is a difference in students’ perceptions among disciplines, and whether the results are reproducible.
