An Interdisciplinary Framework For Impacting Older Adults Health And Physical Activity, Christopher J. Dondzila, Elaine Vandoren
Funded Articles
The exploration of feasible and cost-effective strategies is warranted to mitigate rising healthcare costs and lessen the impact of chronic diseases, functional decline, and disability in older adults. The overwhelming sedentariness of older adults is accompanied by a lack of expertise by healthcare professionals in exercise programming that acknowledge factors influencing physical activity (PA) patterns. We present a framework for a nursing/exercise science interdisciplinary effort to increase PA and improve health in older adults via the delivery of individually tailored exercise programming for an 8-week intervention. Results from this study will be integral in translating effective interdisciplinary efforts across diverse …
A Need For A Culturally Congruent Obesity Intervention At A Community Safety-Net Clinic, Claudia D. Rivera-Salas
A Need For A Culturally Congruent Obesity Intervention At A Community Safety-Net Clinic, Claudia D. Rivera-Salas
Doctoral Projects
Background: Obesity is an epidemic in the United States which causes numerous chronic conditions and disproportionally impacts underserved populations. The removal of barriers that prevent active lifestyles such as unaffordable facilities and inaccessibility are of primary importance in promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Objectives: Collaboration with community organizations to increase access to culturally congruent nutrition and exercise classes for underserved Latino/Hispanic patients of a Midwestern safety-net clinic to reduce obesity, increase physical activity, and improve dietary habits.
Methods: Assessment of current practices revealed the need for project development. Six-week nutrition education class and exercise classes were held for eligible patients which …

Feasibility Trial Intervention “Let’S Move Away From Screen”, Oksana K. Lidke
Doctoral Projects
“Let’s Move Away From Screen” was a six-week quality improvement project implemented in one of West Michigan’s after school programs among students attending 6th and 7th grades. The purpose was to implement physical activity and health education (nutrition, physical activity, and recreational screen time) with major intentions to (a) establish healthy lifestyles and decrease recreational screen time in the after school program and (b) evaluate the project’s acceptability and sustainability by students, parents, volunteers, and the organization. The project’s need was driven by the health needs assessment conducted in February 2016 by the school’s health center. One of the biggest …

The Evaluation Of Select Lifestyle Behavior Modification Following Participation In A Comprehensive Weight Management Clinic, Jennifer L. Bowling
Doctoral Dissertations
Over the last decades, obesity in the United States has reached epidemic proportion. Obesity rates have nearly doubled since 1960 when 43% of the United States population was overweight or obese and 1% was extremely obese. In 2012, approximately 69% of the US population was overweight or obese while 6.3% were extremely obese. Obesity rates are expected to progressively increase; therefore, interventions and guidelines are imperative in order to reduce the long term health risks of the Nation and to reduce overall health care costs (National Institute of Health [NIH], 2012).
Obesity increases morbidity resulting from associated hypertension, cardiovascular disease, …

Primary Care Assessment And Interventions To Improve Physical Activity Among Insufficiently Active Adults Ages 18 Through 64 Years Old, Thomas A. Sanchez
Doctoral Dissertations
A number of chronic and debilitating conditions such as cardiovascular disease, stroke, hypertension, anxiety, depression, pain, osteoporosis, and falls are known to be delayed, improved, or prevented by increasing physical activity (PA) levels. The numbers of those affected form a substantial portion of the US population. As of 2011, for example, 26 million adults in the U.S. were diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (DM) alone. Another 79 million people had elevated blood glucose measurements putting them at risk for DM. Despite knowledge of the connection with chronic disease, PA levels are not consistently and quantitatively assessed during primary care office visits. …
