Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe a quality improvement project to develop and implement a purposeful rounding protocol to improve patient satisfaction and call light rates which affect both patient and nursing staff satisfaction in the emergency department (ED). Importantly, patient satisfaction scores in the ED tend to be low but high scores are related to improved competitive advantage, reimbursement rate, patient outcomes, and nursing staff interruptions.

Patient safety can be at risk during registered nurse handover, particularly when transitioning between high risk areas. According to The Joint Commission (2017), a standardized transition process should be implemented during patient handover. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the effect of a standardized process with a cognitive aid on handover between a pediatric emergency department and an intensive care unit. Introduction: The emergency department plays a critical role in the trajectory of in-hospital patient care. The Center to Advance Palliative Care (CAPC) along with the American College of Emergency Physicians (AECP) recommend early referral to palliative care for patients with life limiting illnesses that present to the emergency department. Research demonstrates that early palliative care consultations result in patient directed goals of care, improved symptom management, decreased length of stay, and reduced direct costs for inpatient hospitalizations.

The objective of this scholarly project is to determine the impact of patient-centered communication education in an emergency department (ED) on the perception of workplace safety. The ED is a vulnerable setting and susceptible to workplace violence (WPV) due in part to increasing numbers of patients presenting to EDs with primary psychiatric complaints. High-quality patient-staff interactions correlate positively with better treatment outcomes. ED (emergency department) personnel are admitting to inpatient services increasing numbers of elderly clients who are at risk for skin breakdown. The ED environment is designed for short term care in response to emergent situations. Pressure related injuries originating in the ED lead to both physical suffering and financial burdens.
