The Effects Of A Telephone-Based Orientation Program, Delivered During The Waiting Time, On Anxiety In Patients Undergoing Coronary Angiography, Maryam Shahpari, Shahin Heidari, Tabandeh Sadeghi

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

Background

Anxiety is one of the consequences of hospitalisation for diagnostic– therapeutic procedures, especially in coronary angiography. Studies have shown that interventions when patients are admitted to hospital can reduce anxiety but no research has been carried out on the effects of interventions before patients are admitted. This study aimed to investigate the effects of a telephone-based orientation program, delivered during the waiting time, on anxiety in patients undergoing coronary angiography.

Materials and methods

In this clinical trial, 70 patients who were candidates for coronary angiography in an urban region of Iran were selected and randomly assigned to the intervention …

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

Aim

This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of a telehealth program on anxiety levels among women underging core needle biopsy for suspected breast cancer.

Samples and setting

A quasi-experimental research study was conducted at a university hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. Seventy women with breast lumps scheduled for a core needle biopsy were enrolled.

Methods

Thirty-five women with breast lumps were assigned to participate in the telehealth program plus routine care, while another group of thirty-five women received only routine care. Data was collected using a demographic data questionnaire and visual analogue scale (VAS). These tools assessed the patients’ anxiety …

Supporting Paediatric Patients: Parental Presence In The Anaesthetic Journey, Salina Blake Dec 2019

Supporting Paediatric Patients: Parental Presence In The Anaesthetic Journey, Salina Blake

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

Objective

This discussion paper explores the use of parental presence during induction of anaesthesia as a method of decreasing paediatric and parental perioperative anxiety.

Setting

A perioperative department in an Australian public hospital.

Subjects

Paediatric patients and parents/guardians.

Primary argument

There is evidence to support the importance of parental presence in the anaesthetic setting; however, this varies between different health care facilities. This paper will argue that the presence of the parent during induction of anaesthesia will decrease the anxiety of the child. However, there has been little discussion about the pivotal role parents can play when participating in the …

Structured Communication Intervention To Reduce Anxiety Of Family Members Waiting For Relatives Undergoing Surgical Procedures, Kathryn Kynoch, Linda Crowe, Annie Mcardle, Judy Munday, Cj Cabilan, Sonia Hines

Journal of Perioperative Nursing

Perioperative nurses recognise that family members experience increased levels of anxiety during the wait for a relative undergoing a surgical procedure. It is often during this time that little or no meaningful communication occurs between family members and health professionals. It has been suggested that a structured information intervention has the potential to increase communication between families and health care professionals as well as decrease family members’ anxiety.

The aim of this study was to establish the effect of a structured communication program on anxiety of family members’ awaiting relatives undergoing surgical procedures. A quasi-experimental design was used with a …
