This literature review analyzes if gender bias influences the disproportionate number of male nurses and male nursing students in the pediatric, maternal, and obstetric nursing fields as compared to nursing as a whole. PubMed and CINAHL databases were utilized to find 15 research articles focused on the experiences of male nurses and male nursing students. These articles were compared amongst each other to find common themes of the male experience in the nursing fields of pediatrics, maternity, and obstetrics. Background: Insufficient caregiver knowledge regarding the physiology and correct management of fever in children contributes to adverse health outcomes in children.

Problem: Lack of multimodal education and resources for caregivers on the management of febrile children leads to medication dosing errors, overutilization of medical resources, and caregiver ambiguity when caring for their child.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a mainstay of treatment for problems such as anxiety and depression. However, access to this form of psychotherapy treatment is limited in rural areas, especially in pediatrics. The purpose of this project was to increase access to CBT through the use of smart phone CBT applications for patients at one rural midwest pediatric clinic. An extensive literature review revealed that mobile cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) applications can be an effective option for adjunct therapy when provider access is limited. Background: 16% of children ages 3-18 have high blood pressure (BP) which, if untreated, may lead to hypertension and organ damage. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening all children for high BP, starting at age 3.

Local problem: A Vermont pediatric primary care clinic screened age 3 patients for high BP only 66.7% of the time. This quality improvement project aimed to raise rates of BP screenings by increasing the clinic staff understanding of the rationale for and confidence in performing age 3 BPs.

Background: Rapid fluid resuscitation is essential to the management of pediatric shock, but there are many barriers to published guideline adherence. Limited evidence describing emergency department (ED) nurse’s knowledge and attitudes of fluid resuscitation exists. This study described pediatric ED nurse’s knowledge and attitudes of fluid resuscitation.

Methods: This single-site descriptive study used survey methodology. A 23-question survey was distributed to nurses in the ED at Boston Children’s Hospital. The survey measured nurse’s knowledge, attitudes, and perceived barriers to fluid resuscitation.
