Combating Childhood Obesity With Provider Education: A Quantitative Study, Trina Larery Dec 2016

Combating Childhood Obesity With Provider Education: A Quantitative Study, Trina Larery

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

The study included an educational program to providers and nurse practitioner students in order to evaluate whether an increase in knowledge and accuracy occurred based on knowledge of evidenced-based responses to specific indicators of childhood overweight and obesity. It assessed the providers’ knowledge and sought to evaluate if increased knowledge occurred after an educational program presentation. Following the educational program, a follow-up survey was distributed via email to assess the providers self-reported perceived practice change six weeks after the education.

Part one measured if an increase in knowledge of the 5210 components, correct laboratory testing, and assessment of comorbidities occurred. …

The Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness-Based Meditation Intervention On Chronic Pain, Jolena B. Allred Dec 2016

The Effects Of A Brief Mindfulness-Based Meditation Intervention On Chronic Pain, Jolena B. Allred

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

As the number of individuals suffering with chronic pain escalates, management is shifting from pain specialists to primary care providers. Nurse practitioners are becoming increasingly responsible for the management of this complex patient population. Analgesics, primarily opioids, have been the standard of chronic pain management with a resulting national crisis related to overuse, improper use, and illegal use of these substances. Mindfulness-based meditation has gained increasing interest and acceptance by both the individuals suffering with chronic pain and the providers managing those who suffer, however, limited investigation is available related to brief interventions provided at point-of-care. This Capstone Project evaluated …

A Qualitative Study Of Rural Nurse Practitioners' In Medically Underserved Clinics, Jama J. Bogart Nov 2016

A Qualitative Study Of Rural Nurse Practitioners' In Medically Underserved Clinics, Jama J. Bogart

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Retention of nurse practitioners is a serious problem in rural medically underserved areas. This study focused on the underserved areas in southeast Kansas, southwest Missouri, and northern Oklahoma. Approximately, three million persons reside in rural medically-underserved areas of the study area. Seventy-three percent of these adults have at least two or more complex chronic medical conditions and there are only 526 nurse practitioners to care for them. Rural providers face many challenges in caring for these individuals and experience anxiety and stress while caring for them. The purpose of this research study was to explore, analyze, and describe the phenomena …

The Effects Of Empowerment On Role Competency And Patient Safety Competency For Newly Graduated Nurse Practitioners, Elsie Duff May 2016

The Effects Of Empowerment On Role Competency And Patient Safety Competency For Newly Graduated Nurse Practitioners, Elsie Duff

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Introduction: Role competence and patient safety (PS) competence among healthcare professionals are rapidly developing issues due to increasing patient acuity and complexity in the healthcare system. Upon graduation, nurse practitioners (NPs) provide autonomous healthcare for populations with complex health needs, thus role and PS competence is imperative. In Canada, few studies have examined NP education and role development specific to NP role competence and PS competencies. This study addresses this gap in the research examining educational experiences of new NP graduates.

Aim: The aim of this study is to test a hypothesized model of the relationships between educational structural empowerment, …

Cultural Competence Of Nurse Practitioners: Providing Care For Gay And Lesbian Clients, Paul Steven Smith May 2016

Cultural Competence Of Nurse Practitioners: Providing Care For Gay And Lesbian Clients, Paul Steven Smith

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Nurse practitioners provide care to an increasing number of diverse individuals who are faced with specific healthcare needs, as well as health disparities. This care encompasses those individuals who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT). These individuals may have experienced delivery of healthcare by providers who lacked the necessary knowledge and/or skills needed to adequately address the needs of this specific client population. Many in the LGBT population have faced prejudice, bias, or homophobia from healthcare providers that became a barrier to accessing healthcare. In order to avoid potential barriers, nurse practitioners who function increasingly as primary care …

Preoperative Assessment Clinic Reduces Total Joint Arthroplasty Case Cancellations, Angelica Adriano Apr 2016

Preoperative Assessment Clinic Reduces Total Joint Arthroplasty Case Cancellations, Angelica Adriano

Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Manuscripts

The purpose of this evidence-based project was to reduce the rate of elective total joint arthroplasty case cancellations by implementing a nurse practitioner-led Preoperative Assessment Clinic (POAC), in the orthopedic department of a major southern California Veterans Affairs (VA) hospital. Retrospective data collected in a 12-month time period showed a surgical cancellation rate of 22%. Reasons for delays or cancellations included: medical instability, abnormal labs and/or studies, patients requiring referral to specialists, dental clearance, patient-initiated cancellations, and active infections. The POAC reduced the rate of case cancellations at 1 year to 17% and at 2 years to 9%. Lost revenue …

A Continuing Education Program On Entrepreneurial Skills For Nurse Practitioners Considering Owning A Private Practice, Christine E. Lamar

College of Nursing and Health Sciences Nursing Master Project Publications

Entrepreneurial education is often lacking for nurse practitioners which can impact their ability to successfully run nurse practitioner owned practices. Nurse practitioners lead busy lives and often learn important business skills as they navigate the business start-up process for their practices. An online educational module was created including some key entrepreneurial skills for nurse practitioners to help alleviate the burden of learning business skills for those nurse practitioners hoping to open their own practices. A link to a 50-minute online module covering introductory entrepreneurial skills for nurse practitioners was sent to the faculty and graduate students in the University of …

Development Of A Practice Guideline For Dnp Prepared Nurse Practitoners Working In Long-Term Care Facilities, Ashley M. Marshall Jan 2016

Development Of A Practice Guideline For Dnp Prepared Nurse Practitoners Working In Long-Term Care Facilities, Ashley M. Marshall

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Clinical evidence-based practice guidelines providing recommendations for health care decision making have become vital components of long-term health care practice in the United States. Frequently changing guidelines have complicated nurse practitioners' (NPs) efforts to implement evidence-based practice into the daily care that they provide to patients. The purpose of this project was to develop an evidence-based practice guideline for doctoral-prepared NPs working in long-term care facilities. This project is important because practitioners use practice guidelines to provide patients with the most appropriate, evidence-based care. Kolcaba's comfort theory was used to guide this project. Kolcaba's theory holds that comfort exists in …

Nurse Practitioner Residency Programs: An Educational Journey, Gregory Paul Rys Jan 2016

Nurse Practitioner Residency Programs: An Educational Journey, Gregory Paul Rys

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Primary care is in a state of crisis due to the lack of clinicians and increasing numbers of insured patients. Encouraging more students to go directly through school for their doctor of nursing practice degree and nurse practitioner (NP) certifications is one proposal to alleviate this crisis. However, this approach would deliver graduates with minimal leadership and clinical experiences directly into practice. One resolution to mitigate this concern would be an NP residency program. Evaluating the knowledge and attitudes of stakeholders prior to the implementation of a NP residency program is an important first step to this implementation plan. The …
