Exploring The Use Of Courageous Followership In Conversations With Nurses And Their Colleagues, Elizabeth L. Paxton
Exploring The Use Of Courageous Followership In Conversations With Nurses And Their Colleagues, Elizabeth L. Paxton
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Health care is fraught with communication issues, many of which can lead to patient safety errors and toxic behaviors. Communication in a hierarchical environment has been historically challenging, especially for nurses. Courageous followership, a style of leadership first introduced in the early 1990s, is a duality of “powerful leaders supporting powerful followers” (Chaleff, 2009, p. 3). The tenets of this leadership style empower both the leader and the follower to have the courage: to assume responsibility, serve, transform, challenge, take moral action, speak up to the hierarchy, and listen to the follower. All of these actions are needed in the …
Implementing Second Person Reporting In Nurse Practitioner Curricula: A Practical Approach To Person-Centered Care, Collette Tattman-Melo
Implementing Second Person Reporting In Nurse Practitioner Curricula: A Practical Approach To Person-Centered Care, Collette Tattman-Melo
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Nurse handover report inclusive of patient participation has been shown to promote a patient-centered approach to care resulting in increased satisfaction, safety and efficacy. However, a review of the literature suggests the pedagogy of handover report is mainly provided within the “hidden curriculum” of practice, rather than within formal nursing programs. As a result, what constitutes person-centeredness in a handover report is subject to individual interpretation and therefore, practiced inconsistently. Purpose: The project goal was for nurse practitioner students to connect theories of person-centered care (PCC) with practice, specifically by using a tripartite, second-person report (SPR) style. …

Health Insurance Literacy Among International College Students: A Qualitative Analysis, Adebola Adegboyega, Chigozie Nkwonta, Jean Edward
Health Insurance Literacy Among International College Students: A Qualitative Analysis, Adebola Adegboyega, Chigozie Nkwonta, Jean Edward
Nursing Faculty Publications
In this qualitative descriptive study, we examine health insurance literacy among a group of international college students. They were recruited from a public, co-educational Southeastern university in the United States during the fall semester of 2016 to participate in semistructured interviews. Data were gathered through a demographic questionnaire, two focus group discussions, and individual interviews. Interview sessions were audio-recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using a thematic analysis approach. Three themes emerged, including knowledge of health insurance options and benefits information, affordability, and unmet expectations. These findings show the need for higher education institutions to develop a plan to integrate international students …
Listening To The Voices Of Community Health Workers: A Multilevel, Culture-Centered Approach To Overcoming Structural Barriers In U.S. Latinx Communities, Angela L. Palmer-Wackerly, Virginia Chaidez, Caitlyn Wayment, Jonathan Baker, Anthony Adams, Lorey A. Wheeler
Listening To The Voices Of Community Health Workers: A Multilevel, Culture-Centered Approach To Overcoming Structural Barriers In U.S. Latinx Communities, Angela L. Palmer-Wackerly, Virginia Chaidez, Caitlyn Wayment, Jonathan Baker, Anthony Adams, Lorey A. Wheeler
Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications
Community Health Workers (CHWs) are often incorporated into efforts to reduce health disparities for vulnerable populations. However, their voices are rarely the focus of research when considering how to increase their job effectiveness and sustainability. The current study addresses this gap by privileging the voices of 28 CHWs who work with Latinx communities in Nebraska through in-depth, semi-structured interviews. Using a multilevel, Culture-Centered Approach (CCA) to Health Communication, we identified two key structural communication issues: (a) increasing language accommodation and (b) increasing (and stabilizing) network integration across three ecological levels of health behavior (individual, microsystem, and exosystem …
Improving Cultural Competency Among Healthcare Providers Working With Refugee Patients, Tena Chau
Improving Cultural Competency Among Healthcare Providers Working With Refugee Patients, Tena Chau
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Background: Increased diversity of the United States population has resulted in the presence of greater disparities in healthcare. One way to address factors contributing to health disparities has been to increase cultural competency in healthcare. Evidence from a review of the literature supports the idea that understanding aspects of cultural competency that are lacking among specific healthcare organizations are helpful to develop programs to address the areas of need. Purpose: The purpose was to complete a quality improvement project to evaluate if an educational intervention based on a specific model would lead to increased level of cultural competence among healthcare …
