Teaching Communication And Therapeutic Relationship Skills To Baccalaureate Nursing Students: A Peer Mentorship Simulation Approach, Leslie Miles, Linda Mabey, Sarah Leggett, Katie Stansfield
Teaching Communication And Therapeutic Relationship Skills To Baccalaureate Nursing Students: A Peer Mentorship Simulation Approach, Leslie Miles, Linda Mabey, Sarah Leggett, Katie Stansfield
Faculty Publications
The literature on techniques for improving student competency in therapeutic communication and interpersonal skills is limited. A simulation approach to enhance the learning of communication skills was developed to address these issues. Second-semester and senior nursing students participated in videorecorded standardized patient simulations, with senior students portraying the patient. Following simulated interactions, senior students provided feedback to junior students on their use of communication skills and other therapeutic factors. To integrate the learning experience, junior students completed a written assignment, in which they identified effective and noneffective communication; personal strengths and weaknesses; and use of genuineness, empathy, and positive regard. …

Np Bookshelf. [Review Of The Book Compassion Fatigue And Burnout In Nursing: Enhancing Professional Quality Of Life, By V. Todaro-Franceschi], Leslie W. Miles
Faculty Publications
This book is not just for nurses who care for the dying patient but for all nurses who find themselves at some point in their career feeling burned out, dissatisfied with work life, bullied, or lacking a sense of meaning and purpose in their professional quality of life. Todaro-Franceschi identifies the causes of compassion fatigue and burnout as being multifactorial, yet having a core symptom of the nurse internalizing suffering to the point that it negatively transforms the care a nurse can give. The target audience is wide, with application to current practitioners, students, nurse educators, and anyone working in …

Psychometric Properties Of The Index Of Relocation Adjustment, Abir K. Bekhet, Jaclene Zauszniewski
Psychometric Properties Of The Index Of Relocation Adjustment, Abir K. Bekhet, Jaclene Zauszniewski
College of Nursing Faculty Research and Publications
More and more American older adults are relocating to retirement communities, and they experience challenges in adjusting to new surroundings that may increase their depression and mortality. An instrument not previously tested in the United States, the Index of Relocation Adjustment (IRA), may help in early identification of poor relocation adjustment. This study examined the psychometric properties of the IRA using secondary data from a convenience sample of 104 older adults who relocated to 6 retirement communities in Northeast Ohio. Cronbach’s alpha was .86. The IRA was correlated with measures of positive cognitions (r = .48, p < .01) and relocation controllability (r = …

Results And Lessons Learned From A Nurse Practitioner-Guided Dementia Care Intervention For Primary Care Patients And Their Family Caregivers, Richard H. Fortinsky, Colleen Delaney, Ofer Harel, Karen Pasquale, Elena Schjavland, John Lynch, Alison Kleppinger, Suzanne Crumb
Articles - Patient Care
Older adults with dementia care needs often visit primary care physicians (PCPs), but PCP dementia care limitations are widely documented. This study tested the value of employing a nurse practitioner (NP) with geropsychiatric expertise to augment PCP care for newly and recently diagnosed patients and family caregivers. Twenty-one dyads received the NP intervention; 10 dyads were controls. Outcomes included patient neuropsychiatric symptom and quality of life changes, and caregiver depression, burden, and self-efficacy changes. Intervention acceptability by patients, caregivers, and PCPs was determined. No outcome differences were found; however, the NP intervention was deemed highly satisfactory by all stakeholders. Patients …

The Effect Of A Group Lifestyle Coaching Model On Hba1c And Psychosocial Constructs In Low-Income Patients With Type 2 Diabetes, Lillian Tryon, D.N.P.
Faculty Works
The epidemic of diabetes and its complications is concerning, and new approaches need to be explored for fostering better patient outcomes in a cost effective way. This exploratory study examined the effectiveness of a group coaching model on glycemic control, diabetes knowledge, diabetes empowerment, and diabetes self-management compared to usual care or participation in a 90-minute diabetes education class. A convenience sample of 34 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus was recruited at a clinic providing services to the uninsured. Participants self-selected into the coaching group (n= 12), class group (n = 10), or control group ( …
Attitudes And Preventative Health Practices In Relation To Obesity, Brieana Evans
Attitudes And Preventative Health Practices In Relation To Obesity, Brieana Evans
Honors College
Over the past thirty years, obesity has become a health epidemic, affecting a large percentage of the United States population, leading to a decrease in quality of life related to comorbid illnesses, which are directly correlated to being overweight or obese. Due to these comorbid illnesses, obesity places a large fiscal burden on the healthcare system, directly associated with treating related diseases and indirectly through lost production due to “sick days”. In 2013, the American Medical Association ruled to classify obesity as a disease, which has brought about an increased need for preventative health measures. Steps toward obesity prevention are …
Cultural Competency In The Medical Workplace: A Look At Outpatient Clinic Nurses At A Children's Hospital In New England, Evelyn S. Callahan
Cultural Competency In The Medical Workplace: A Look At Outpatient Clinic Nurses At A Children's Hospital In New England, Evelyn S. Callahan
Honors Scholar Theses
This paper analyzes the current state of progress toward cultural competency in the medical workplace, specifically in the hospital setting. It compares the current writing on the topic to research done at a large New England children’s hospital. The nurses are all individuals who work in an out patient setting so they often see the same patients regularly for longer periods of time. This differs from the in-patient or floor nurses who only spend limited time with a constantly changing population of patients. The research involved one-on-one interviews and a focus group with nurses at the hospital. The focus group …

Cuba’S Maternal-Child Health, Colleen Marzilli
Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
The purpose is to elucidate the differences between the Cuban and United States (U.S.) maternal-child health delivery systems by providing a descriptive, retrospective evaluation based on a convenience sample of data gathered through observations with Cuban public health officials, including physicians, nurses, and citizens. U.S.and Cuban data were analyzed using available United Nations data. In Cuba, there are several programs that contribute to excellent maternal-child health outcomes. Two health interventions for the mother and child are regarded as “hygiene” and include the maternity home and vaccination program. Maternity homes provide comprehensive, residential care for at-risk mothers until the onset of …

The Effect Of Breathable Under Pads To Decrease Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcers: A Nurse Resident Project, Sara Meshino, Bsn, Rn, Bridget Trefz, Bsn, Rn
Department of Nursing papers and presentations
PURPOSE
To reduce the rate of hospital acquired pressure ulcers (HAPU), in June 2013, a large urban academic medical center switched from non-breathable to breathable under pads for incontinent patients lying on either a standard bed (low risk patients) or low-air-loss mattress (high risk patients). Standard pressure ulcer prevention measures were maintained. Staff on two oncology units sought to determine the effectiveness of breathable vs. non-breathable under pads in reducing the rate of HAPU and UAPU.

Nursing Faculty Publications and Presentations
Introduction: Health professional shortages are a significant issue throughout the USA, particularly in rural communities. Filling nurse vacancies is a costly concern for many critical access hospitals (CAH), which serve as the primary source of health care for rural communities. CAHs and rural communities have strengths and weaknesses that affect their recruitment and retention of rural nurses. The purpose of this study was to develop a tool that rural communities and CAHs can utilize to assess their strengths and weaknesses related to nurse recruitment and retention.
Methods: The Nursing Community Apgar Questionnaire (NCAQ) was developed based on an extensive literature …
Harassment: A Challenge At Workplace, Muhammad Younas, Salma Rattani
Harassment: A Challenge At Workplace, Muhammad Younas, Salma Rattani
School of Nursing & Midwifery
Health care professionals are deeply involved in caring for the human life and during this process, they come in a close contact with the care recipients. This, at times, positions the health care professionals in a vulnerable situation including workplace harassment which is an offensive verbal or physical act and comprises of an unwanted behavior or advancement or demand for sexual and other favors. This conduct creates an intimidating, unfriendly, and offensive work environment (Sigal, 2006). Consequently, it impacts on care providers' performance, quality care and their retention in the system. Hence, it is important that the health care personnel …

Defining Professional Nursing Accountability: A Literature Review, Lorretta Krautscheid
Defining Professional Nursing Accountability: A Literature Review, Lorretta Krautscheid
Faculty Publications - College of Nursing
Professional nursing accountability is described by both professional nursing organizations and nursing education credentialing agencies as a core aspect that underpins professional nursing practice. Although accountability is foundational to professional practice, a review of the literature revealed no consistent language or definition regarding professional nursing accountability. Instead, the literature itself reveals that professional nursing accountability is challenging to both describe and define. The ambiguity surrounding how to define professional nursing accountability contributes to challenges associated with both teaching and evaluating student nurse accountability within nursing education curricula. This article provides a reliable and comprehensive definition of professional nursing accountability derived …

Understanding How Student Nurses Experience Morally Distressing Situations: Caring For Patients With Different Values And Beliefs In The Clinical Environment, Nancy J. Matchett, Mary Jo C. Stanley
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Introduction/Background: Moral distress and related concepts surrounding morality and ethical decision-making have been given much attention in nursing. Despite the general consensus that moral distress is an affective response to being unable to act morally, the literature attests to the need for increased clarity regarding theoretical and conceptual constructs used to describe precisely what the experience of moral distress involves. The purpose of this study is to understand how student nurses experience morally distressing situations when caring for patients with different values and beliefs than their own in the clinical environment Methods: This study is based on secondary analysis of …

An Exploration Of Self-Management Support In The Context Of Palliative Nursing: A Modified Concept Analysis, Bridget Johnson, Liz Rogerson, Jurate Macijauskiene, Aurelija Blaževičienė, Patricia Cholewka
Publications and Research
Background
The role of self-management is often ambiguous, yet, it is an important area in clinical practice for palliative nurses. A clear conceptual understanding, however, of what it represents is lacking.
Method
This paper reports an analysis of the concept of self-management support in palliative nursing. Avant and Walker's method was used to guide this concept analysis. A search of electronic databases (1990–2013), use of internet search engines and supplementary hand searching produced an international data set of reviews, empirical research, editorials, protocols and guidelines.
Results
Based on the analysis self-management support in palliative nursing has been defined as assessing, …
