Dancing During Labor: Are Women Down To Boogie?, Drew A. Horter, Kayla Heslin, Marie Forgie, Emily Malloy, Jessica J. F. Kram

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Recent social media trends have demonstrated increased interest in dancing during the final weeks of pregnancy and labor. However, there is limited evidence about dancing during labor and its impact on labor pain and duration as well as patient satisfaction. Before conducting a prospective study, given that enrollment is often challenging, our feasibility study aimed to assess the willingness of pregnant women to participate in a future study evaluating low-impact dance during labor. We anonymously surveyed a convenience sample of English-speaking/reading pregnant women who presented for prenatal care at 1 of 3 clinics from June 2019 to July 2019. Questions …

Dancing During Labor: Social Media Trend Or Future Practice?, Caroline P. Toberna, Drew Horter, Kayla Heslin, Marie M. Forgie, Emily Malloy, Jessica J. F. Kram

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Over the past 30 years, medical interventions in pregnancy and childbirth have increased. Some pregnant women seek less invasive and nonpharmacological options to manage discomforts during labor. While exercise during pregnancy is recommended, less is known about exercise, specifically dancing, during labor. While anecdotal evidence is supportive, little is known about the implications of exercise and dance during the first stage of labor for pain reduction and labor progression. Some movements common in dance, such as expanding hip circles that loosen and relax muscles of the pelvic floor, may be beneficial to women during labor. Available evidence suggests that dancing …

“Save My Baby”: The Lived Experience Of Hospitalized Pregnant Women With A Threat Of Preterm Birth, Dua' Yousef Al-Maharma, Inaam A. Khalaf, Fathieh Abu-Moghli, Sajeda Alhamory Apr 2020

“Save My Baby”: The Lived Experience Of Hospitalized Pregnant Women With A Threat Of Preterm Birth, Dua' Yousef Al-Maharma, Inaam A. Khalaf, Fathieh Abu-Moghli, Sajeda Alhamory

The Qualitative Report

Activity restriction in hospital to prevent preterm birth (PTB) is widely used as the first step of treatment. It is associated with adverse physiological and psychological effects on maternal and fetal health that might persist years after birth. A sample of 10 pregnant women who were hospitalized for being at risk for PTB were purposively recruited to describe their lived experience via semi-structured in-depth interview. Five themes were identified, the maternal role establishment and suspending responsibilities, the women's perception of fear of uncertainty and finding support, dissatisfaction of care, the change of routine life and family relationships, and the cultural …

Spousal Factors Associated With Antenatal Psychosocial Stress: A Case Control Study, Asha K. V Ms

Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences

Stress during pregnancy affects both mother and foetus resulting in unfavourable pregnancy outcomes. Studies regarding the factors linked with increased stress during pregnancy aids to improve the mental status of the mother during gestation and can lead to a reduction in negative pregnancy outcomes. The objective of the study was to identify spousal factors associated with antenatal psychosocial stress among pregnant women seeking prenatal care from a teaching hospital at the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. Methods: Case control design was used for the study. The tools used for data collection were the Antenatal Psychosocial Stress scale (APSS) and a semi-structured …

Pregnancy is a special feeling and special time for the mother-to-be, where she should take special care for her body as every action of hers will affect her baby. Every woman experiences pregnancy differently with a mixture of stressful and joyful moments that come along with it. Childbirth is a life-changing event for the woman and her family. Women should be safe during labour and birth. The birthing environment influences the feeling of safety and satisfaction in childbirth. The paper presents a paradigm shift that envisions how childbirth methodology has advanced, with a view to bring about a stereotype shift …

Opening Up About Birth: An Autoethnographic Account Of Prolonged Labour, Petra B. Elias Feb 2017

Opening Up About Birth: An Autoethnographic Account Of Prolonged Labour, Petra B. Elias

The Qualitative Report

A woman’s first pregnancy can be both emotionally exciting and daunting. There are many changes to make, but there is little emotional support to adjust to the role, the focus being on the physical process which is most often managed medically (Spear, 2008; Zasloff, Schytt, & Waldenström, 2007) though warnings about what could occur are not routinely told (Kaitz, 2007, pp. 720-721). This paper presents an autoethnographic story of first time pregnancy and the unfolding labour. The methodology of autoethnography is a useful tool for conveying stories of lived experience at a level of detail often previously unrecorded, evoking for …

Aim: To describe the perceptions of Nepali men regarding the role of the man with respect to family planning, pregnancy and childbirth.
Methods: A qualitative study was conducted with 15 Nepali men in both urban and rural areas. The material was analyzed through inductive …

Identifying Intimate Partner Violence During Pregnancy In Prenatal Care Settings, Tifani R. Fletcher, Andrea D. Clements, Beth Bailey Jan 2016

Identifying Intimate Partner Violence During Pregnancy In Prenatal Care Settings, Tifani R. Fletcher, Andrea D. Clements, Beth Bailey

International Journal of Health Sciences Education

More than 324,000 women each year are estimated as having experienced intimate partner violence (IPV) during pregnancy. Correctly identifying women experiencing all forms and severity of IPV is necessary to inform the implementation of interventions to prevent and treat IPV. This can optimally be accomplished with data from accurate screening instruments. The United States Preventative Services Task force has recently recommended that all women who are pregnant should be screened for IPV over the course of their pregnancy and postnatal visits. Currently, clinical practice and research are hindered by the lack of validated IPV screening measurements for a pregnant population. …

Prenatal Care: A Study Of Perceived And Actual Barriers For Utah County Women, Melanie Droubay, Dr. Rosanne Schwartz Jan 2014

Prenatal Care: A Study Of Perceived And Actual Barriers For Utah County Women, Melanie Droubay, Dr. Rosanne Schwartz

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Prenatal care is a significant indicator of health care. Women who receive both early and adequate prenatal care have less problems with their pregnancy as well as decreased neonatal, infant and maternal mortality (Kiely & Kogan, 2000). Because Utah has a proportionally high volume of pregnancies, prenatal care is a major concern for this state. Through this research, the adequacy of prenatal care was studied as well as any possible barriers to receiving prenatal care for first-time mothers living in Utah County.

Barriers And Facilitators To Prenatal Care For Pregnant Latina Women In Cobb County, Georgia, Carol Holtz, Annette Bairan

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This research study seeks to identify factors that serve as barriers and/or facilitators to prenatal care for Latina women and to provide data to assist health care providers, health care agencies, and policy makers in developing programs that maximize access to prenatal care for Latina women. In addition, other groups may also find this data useful, such as scholars in Latin American studies, immigration, cultural diversity, minority health care, and health care in general. The research questions consist of the following: (1) What do indigent pregnant (or recently delivered) Latina women believe about prenatal care? (2) What are the barriers …
