One of the most important factors affecting the quality of diabetes care is the association between a patient’s knowledge and their practices. The practice gap in this primary care clinic was a lack of standardized diabetic foot care. The purpose of this DNP project was to provide nursing staff with an evidence- based, culturally congruent diabetic footcare curriculum that could help decrease inconsistencies in care. The practice-focused question for this project addressed whether an educational program for nursing staff on diabetic footcare would increase their knowledge and translate this knowledge into practice to prevent diabetic foot infections and its complications. …

Type 2 diabetes mellitus is a preventable chronic condition that affects many members of the U.S. population. Diabetes is associated with comorbidities including cardiovascular disease, end-stage renal disease, hypertension, neuropathy, and lower limb amputations, leading to increased mortality. Patient self-care education has been shown to improve adherence to diabetes self-care (DSC) in the primary care setting. However, advanced practice registered nurses (APRN) in the local primary care setting lacked knowledge of DSC. Therefore, nursing knowledge of DSC was needed. Education correlates with nurse performance and avoiding mental fatigue. This project attempted to answer the question, “Educating nurses on mental fatigue will increase knowledge” focusing on educating rehabilitative nurses regarding mental fatigue. The project was guided by the Analysis, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate model. Twenty rehabilitative nurses were administered a pretest consisting of 10 multiple-choice test questions. They received education on mental fatigue through PowerPoint presentations and handouts. After completing the education, participants were administered a posttest with the same 10 questions. An evaluation tool consisting of six questions was completed measuring an increase in knowledge after the posttest. …

Assessing volume status in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) remains a difficult task. Newer technology, such as CardioMEMS, allows providers to download pulmonary artery pressure measurements from an implanted sensor. In a large rural emergency department (ED), lack of staff education on CardioMEMS made the device useless when a patient presented to the ED. The purpose of this project was to develop a staff education in-service to address the gap in practice.
