The practice of mindfulness meditation may be beneficial for college athlete’s mental health and wellness. College athletes are in a period of significant personal growth and experience high amounts of stress related to athletic performance, academics, and peer relationships. Integrating mindfulness meditation for college athletes has been linked to improving relaxation, concentration, and performance while decreasing fatigue and negative emotions related to fear or anxiety. This scholarly project explores the implementation of four mindfulness meditation sessions on perceptions of stress, mental focus, athletic performance, and presence in female college track and field athletes. Social determinants of health in Tanzania include poverty, low educational standards, and pandemic diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS. Girls in Tanzania are at an increased disadvantage in educational and vocational opportunities relative to boys. They are also an identifiable 'at risk' population regarding access to health care and health education. To address vulnerability of girls, a 5 day retreat for 12 year old girls was held in July, 2014 in Ruaha Mbuyuni, a small village in Iringa region of Tanzania. Breastfeeding provides nutritional, health, immunological, psychological, economical and environmental benefits. Despite the abundance of scientific evidence and public health campaigns, the United States fails to meet national goals for breast feeding rates. Numerous barriers to lactation are identified and explored. However, by far, returning to work has the greatest impact on the duration of breastfeeding. Employers and organizations who support breastfeeding are the recipients of a multitude of benefits.
