The Relationship Between Perceived Stress And Academic Self-Efficacy To The Academic Performance Of Undergraduate Nursing Students, Ashley J. Pierre
The Relationship Between Perceived Stress And Academic Self-Efficacy To The Academic Performance Of Undergraduate Nursing Students, Ashley J. Pierre
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
When nursing students fail and are required to repeat a course in a pre-licensure nursing program, they are at risk for attrition. While nursing student attrition is a problem with recognized consequences to the student, school, and profession, the incidence of students who fail a required course and need to repeat it has had little attention. Despite research addressing students' experiences with course failure, little describes strategies and interventions to support the retention and success of these students. The first manuscript, Student Repeaters in Baccalaureate Nursing Programs: A Concept Analysis, provided a foundation that enhanced the conceptual understanding of nursing …
Exploring Relationships Among Environmental And Intrapersonal Variables And Evidence-Based Practice Implementation, Amanda N. Canada
Exploring Relationships Among Environmental And Intrapersonal Variables And Evidence-Based Practice Implementation, Amanda N. Canada
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Evidence-based practice (EBP) is not consistently implemented within healthcare settings; although many organizations claim it is how they deliver care in the 21st century. In a review of the literature, multiple intrapersonal variables were found to impact the inconsistency with which EBP is applied and the success of its implementation within nursing practice. Organizational culture and perceived stress can influence the uptake of EBP beliefs and can affect EBP implementation. Clinicians who have more confidence in their EBP knowledge and skills are expected to implement best practices. Underpinned by Social Cognitive Theory, a model was developed to guide study …
Exploring Help-Seeking Intentions Of Homeless Veterans Attending A Stand Down Event, Tara Vaughn
Exploring Help-Seeking Intentions Of Homeless Veterans Attending A Stand Down Event, Tara Vaughn
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Lack of help-seeking behavior among homeless veterans results in higher burden of disease and lower quality of life. No studies have been conducted involving help- seeking intentions of homeless veterans within the veteran stand down population. Pender’s Revised Health Promotion Model was used to guide this descriptive correlational study with the aim of exploring the extent selected personal characteristics and experiences and behavior-specific factors affect help-seeking intentions among homeless veterans attending a stand down event.
A convenience sample of 86 homeless veterans (mean age 56) was recruited from a 3-day veteran stand down event in Northern California. Each participant was …
Functional Mastery Of Health Ownership In Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Maria Donnelley
Functional Mastery Of Health Ownership In Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Maria Donnelley
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis) is an incurable autoimmune disease causing overwhelming physical distress and psychological adaptation. The negative disease symptoms effect all aspects of everyday life. The physical and biological burdens of the disease progression can be complicated and long-term. Not all patients have a positive outcome throughout their health journey. This dissertation is an exploration of the associations between an individual’s personal characteristics and life situation and the ability to function fully and achieve mastery of their health within the parameters of their disease burden. The first manuscript, Functional Mastery of Health Ownership: A Model …
Nurses' Self-Efficacy For Managing Elder Abuse, Alana Anderson
Nurses' Self-Efficacy For Managing Elder Abuse, Alana Anderson
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Elder abuse is a serious issue that negatively affects physical and mental health in a significant portion of the older population. Abuse of older adults is not adequately detected or reported. Nurses have frequent contact with older victims of abuse, providing them the opportunity to play a significant role in detecting, reporting, and intervening in such cases. Nurses are reluctant to intervene due to lack of education on elder abuse and lack of self-efficacy in their ability to properly manage elder abuse. This quantitative, descriptive study was designed to determine whether educational content on elder abuse, perceived capability, and self-efficacy …

Exploring The Differences Between Adult Cancer Survivors And Their Caregivers' Social Support, Self-Efficacy For Physical Activity, Physical Activity Behavior, And Quality Of Life, Fedricker Diane Barber
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Less than 20% of cancer survivors meet recommended physical activity (PA) guidelines. Research reporting positive impact of social support on PA in cancer survivors has not included their caregivers' PA. A review of the literature examining social support and PA in cancer survivors supported including caregivers in developing strategies to increase PA in cancer survivors. The purposes of this study were: (1) to explore the differences and relationships between adult cancer survivors' and caregivers' social support, self-efficacy for physical activity (SEPA), PA, and quality of life (QOL), and (2) understand cancer survivors and caregivers' perception of social support in PA …

Effect Of The Total Girl Wellness Program On Wellness Behaviors In Adolescent Females, Jenifer M. Chilton
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Adolescent females perceive themselves to be healthy but research suggests this population engages in unhealthy and risky behaviors. Health habits established during youth transition into adulthood and may contribute to chronic diseases later in life. Guided by Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), the purpose of this study was to test the effect of a comprehensive wellness intervention on overall wellness, physical fitness, and self-efficacy for health promoting behaviors in female adolescents. A multidisciplinary concept analysis of shame suggested components of shame can impact environment, personal factors, and behavior, the key concepts of SCT. An intervention based on SCT and titled …

Effect Of A Multimedia Intervention On Outcomes Expectations And Perceived Self-Efficacy For The Sex Educator Role For Parents/Caregivers Of African American Adolescent Males, Carmon V.N. Weekes
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Risky sexual behavior among youth is a national concern and places adolescents at high risk for undesirable health outcomes. According to the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, African American males are more likely to engage in intercourse before age 13 than other racial groups. Research reporting positive impact of parent-adolescent sex communication on influencing risky behaviors has rarely included parents of African American adolescent males. A systematic review of the literature examining health literacy in African Americans supported the importance of including non-print sources of information for this population. The purpose of this study was to test the effect of …

Empowerment As A Hypertension Management Strategy For African American Women, E'Loria Simon Campbell
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Successful health management strategies remain elusive for the 25 million African- American (AA) women afflicted with high blood pressure. The purpose of this study was to determine if a psychological empowerment coaching (PEC) intervention had an impact on health promotion outcomes. The primary research strategy measured the impact of a PEC intervention on health care empowerment, self-efficacy, intent to exercise, and health outcomes among hypertensive AA women. Pender's Revised Health Promotion Model (Figure 1) served as the theoretical model for this quasi-experimental study utilizing pretest-posttest measurement with subjects serving as their own controls. A convenience sample of 35 hypertensive women …
