More women than men are dying of cardiovascular disease. The misconception persists that heart disease is a "man's disease" and not an urgent health care issue for women. In the United States, heart disease kills more women than all cancers combined. In 1997, 228,679 women died due to cardiovascular disease, and 41,443 women died from breast cancer. The purpose of this descriptive study was to identify the known modifiable risk factors for osteoporosis in the college population. Pender's Theory of Health Promotion served as the theoretical framework for this study. The research question was as follows : What preventive behaviors are college students participating in that will increase their risk of osteoporosis? Risk factors were measured using the Osteoporosis Lifestyle Survey, a tool with face validity. Since the early 1960s coronary artery disease (CAD) has been the nation's leading killer of middle-aged men. Even with development of coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, the recurrence rate remains high. The research question addressed in this descriptive study was what risk factors associated with CAD can be identified in individuals after CABG surgery? Using Becker's Health Belief Model as a theoretical framework, a convenience sample of 69 postoperative CABG clients from a rural Mississippi cardiac rehabilitation program completed researcher-developed surveys. This research study described the relationship of risk factors associated with high rates of infant m ortality and age in mothers who have experienced the death o f th e ir infants.
