Approximately 13 million people worldwide receive treatment in intensive care units (ICUs) annually. Many patients admitted to the intensive care unit require mechanical ventilation for their survival and attempts to mobilize these critically ill patients is frequently restricted for their own safety. It has been suggested that this lack of mobility may have a significant negative impact on the recovery process and lengthen the time of the patient’s overall hospital stay and recovery. Additionally, survivors report significant physical impairments and deconditioning that present obstacles towards their recovery and well-being after prolonged ventilation.
