Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a type of depression that has occurred in women during pregnancy or after the delivery of a child. In the United States, approximately 13.2% of postpartum women were diagnosed with postpartum depression. Research indicated that early identification of PPD led to the best outcomes for postpartum mothers. Routine postpartum depression education and screening for postpartum depression did not exist in the perinatal unit at a Southeast Georgia rural hospital. Lack of nursing knowledge and skill were two barriers identified to screening patients for PPD and providing discharge education. The study provided an educational intervention to provide …

Youth are a vulnerable population due to their age, developmental level, and dependability on others. Child abuse is a public health issue that addresses a broad range of inflicted harm ranging from neglect to physical and sexual maltreatment. A severe form of child sexual abuse is the Commercial Exploitation of Children (CSEC), also known as Child Sex Trafficking (CST), and Human Minor Sex Trafficking (HMST). Increasing Knowledge And Self-Efficacy In Nurses Orienting To Cardiovascular Surgery Using A New Periop 202 Program, David Reinhart

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

The operating room theater can be intimidating for new nurses, thus leading to a shortage of nurses who are comfortable working in this environment. Evidence supports that 50% of perioperative nurses in 2017 were between the age of 50 and 59. Additionally, no formal didactic courses are being offered in undergraduate programs and the challenging environment related directly to the future shortage of perioperative nurses. This negatively impacts the number of trained perioperative cardiovascular nurses. The project proposed a new didactic educational Perioperative (Periop) 202 program that aimed to increase nurses’ self-efficacy to function on the cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) …

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

Abstract Approximately 15% of adults 18 years of age or older in the United States smoke tobacco. Over 16 million people who smoke tobacco have a related disease. Since nurses comprise the largest group of health care providers in the country, they could have a big impact on client cessation efforts. Many nurses, however, feel unprepared to provide evidence-based smoking cessation counseling (SCC) per established national guidelines. The aim of this project was to provide a brief workshop providing nursing students and faculty training. The theory of planned behavior was used as a framework to measure attitudes toward providing SCC, …

Improving Discharge Planning Using The Re-Engineered Discharge (Red) Program, Sterling L. Roberts, Leslie C. Moore, Brian Jack

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

The 12-actionable items of the Re-Engineered Discharge Program (RED) are equipped to address essential areas to prevent hospital re-visits. Evidence supports the use of nurses to complete these essential components of hospital interventions. The aims of this project were to: 1) assess nurses’ readiness to learn prior to receiving education on the RED Program, and 2) measure the utilization of the RED discharge process from patient chart reviews following an educational intervention focused on the RED 12-actionable items. Participants (N = 69) scored high M = 219.8 (SD 23.7) on the Self-Directed Learning Readiness – Adult Scale, indicating the nurses …
