Undergraduate Research Symposium

Abstract:

Introduction: In Missouri, there are over 13,000 children who are currently receiving care through the state foster care system. Because being removed from their families causes life-long trauma and decreased quality of life for many children, it is important that the situation is approached in the best way. While there are differences between St. Louis, Missouri and San Jose, Costa Rica, the Costa Rican child welfare system, El Patronato Nacional de Infancia (PANI), uses several strategies that may be beneficial in St. Louis.

Purpose: To examine the current policies and programs in San Jose, Costa Rica to …

Background The purpose of this article is to engage clinicians in a dialogue about ideas on how to provide more specific, contextually relevant, practical and culturally tailored diabetes self-management recommendations as suggested by Mexican-American women diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Current diabetes self-management recommendations, targeting Mexican Americans in particular, remain largely broad (“reduce your calorie intake” or “cut back on carbs”), overly ambitious (“stop eating tortillas”), and relatively ineffective (Svedbo Engström et al., BMJ Open 6(3):e010249, 2016; Johansson et al., Int J Qual Stud Health Well-being 11, 2016; Oomen et al., The Diabetes Educ 25:220-225, 1999; Franek, Ont Health Technol …

Inequalities in society, culture, and finance have resulted in civil unrest, rioting, and intentional violence throughout our history. Nowhere is this currently more apparent than in the cities of Ferguson and Baltimore. It is not the civil unrest itself, but the resulting rioting and intentional violence that can create a disaster situation. This increases the care burden of health care providers during times when the governmental structure may be overwhelmed or functioning in a less than optimal manner. Beginning with the death of Michael Brown, civil unrest over the last 2 years has necessitated a closer examination of the role …
