Addressing these negative attitudes towards behavioral health patients can improve health outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Background: Tobacco use is the leading preventable cause of death and disease in the United States, with the prevalence remaining especially high among people with mental illness. Mental health providers often lack training in smoking cessation and feel uncomfortable addressing the issue with this patient population. Studies show that educational training offered to providers can lead to increased knowledge that improves the provider’s confidence and attitude about delivering smoking cessation treatment to patients. Mental health professionals must receive training on smoking cessation treatment modalities so they can effectively provide holistic care needed for recovery for patients with mental illness.

Background: Psychotic disorders (e.g., Schizophrenia, schizoaffetive disorder) are associated with a higher smoking prevalence (relative to other psychiatric disorders) and smoking attributable mortality. Until recently, little has been done to address the disproportionate smoking in this population. The objectives of our study are to: 1) describe the characteristics of smokers with a history of psychiatric disorders (i.e., none, psychotic, and depressive/anxiety) and 2) examine smoking cessation/reduction outcomes by history of psychiatric disorders.

Aims: A history of either a substance use disorder (SUD) or psychiatric disorder (PD) is associated with tobacco use. However, there is limited information available on tobacco dependence treatment outcomes among individuals with co-occurring SUD and PD. Methods: Data from 202 participants enrolled in a tobacco dependence treatment program in an outpatient clinic setting were analysed. Findings: In multivariate analysis, having a history of SUD only (OR =.11, 95% CI = .02–.76) and having a co-occurring SUD and PD (OR = .13, 95% CI = .02–.81), as compared to having neither, were significant predictors of a lower likelihood of achieving …

• Secondhand tobacco smoke (SHS) exposure increases the risk for cancer, respiratory illness, and cardiovascular disease.

• Individuals with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) have a higher smoking prevalence than the general population, placing them at increased risk for related morbidity and mortality.

• Given the higher smoking prevalence in this population, the risk for SHS exposure among smokers and nonsmokers with SPMI should be an issue of concern. Yet, SHS exposure in this population is understudied.
